NASAの宇宙開発を扱ったドキュメンタリーで、マーキュリー計画からはじまりジェミニ計画、アポロ計画、そしてスペース・シャトルといった宇宙への挑戦が当時の貴重な映像とともに紹介されていく。ガス・グリソムの帰還カプセルが沈没する瞬間がフィルムに収められていたなんて知らなかったよ。
全体的に淡々としている印象はあるものの、月面着陸や宇宙遊泳のシーンなどは素晴らしいし、劇場でなくてもDVDとかで観る価値はある作品かな。宮迫博之によるナレーションは下手ではないものの、あれより上手い人はもっといるでしょ、という感じ。
あと話の盛り上がりとしては、これはもう仕方ないんだけれど、やはりアポロ11号の月面着陸のところがいちばん面白くて、あとは地味なミッションばかりになっていくような気がする。あれだけアナログな機材で人を月まで送ったスタッフは本当に凄かった。それに比べるとスペース・シャトルは変に洗練されてる一方で事故が多いし。
最近ではロケットが打ち上げられてもロクなニュースになりませんが、かつては打ち上げが世界的イベントだったことがこの映画を観るとよく分かる。また誰か早く月とか火星に人を送ってくれないかなあ。
