いろいろ海外ドラマを見ているつもりでも、いかんせん数が多いために１度も観たことがない作品は多々ありまして、特にケーブル・ネットワークの作品がそうなんだけど、FXでやってる「SONS OF ANARCHY」というシリーズの評判が良いのでとりあえず第１話を観てみたのです（本国では現在シーズン２が放送中）。
これはカリフォルニア北部の町を拠点とするバイカー・ギャング「サンズ・オブ・アナーキー」たちの姿を描いたもので、武器の密輸などに手を染めて暮らしている彼らは、メキシコ系のギャングたちや町に覚醒剤を流行らせようとする白人至上主義者たちの脅威から町を守り、自分たちのライフスタイルを貫こうとしていた。しかしギャングのリーダーの義理の息子であるジャックスは、自分の子供が生まれたことや、ギャングの創始者だった実の父親の手記を発見したことなどから、ギャングとしての生き方に疑問を抱くようになる…というのが大まかなプロット。
あっちのバイカー・ギャングって日本の暴走族なんかよりももっと組織力が強くて、むしろ日本の暴力団のようなネットワークを持ってたりするわけだが、このサンズ・オブ・アナーキーも全国に組織があるギャングということらしい。単に犯罪組織を美化するような内容にはなってなくて、２代にわたって続くギャングの概念とか理想が、周囲の変化の波にさらされていく様を描いている。あとシェイクスピアの「ハムレット」をベースにしているらしくて、他界した父と残された母親、その母親と結婚した義理の父などに主人公のジャックスがいろいろ苦悩させられるという物語にもなっている。
なお主人公の母親役は「フューチュラマ」のリーラことケイティ・セーガルで、義理の父親はヘルボーイことロン・パールマン。当初は義理の父をスコット・グレンが演じる予定だったらしいけど、やはりパールマンのゴツい体のほうがずっと画面上で存在があるよな。ギャングの皆が来ているレザー・ジャケットもなかなかカッコ良い。必ずしも次の話をすぐに観たくなるような作品ではなかったけど、非常に出来のいいシリーズであることは間違いない。
