「ウォーキング・デッド」をクビになったフランク・ダラボンが新たに製作した、TNTの新シリーズ。

舞台となるのは1947年のロサンゼルス。街にはミッキー・コーエンやバグジー・シーゲルといったギャングの大物たちによる汚職が蔓延し、対するLA市警はウィリアム・パーカー本部長たちを筆頭にギャングの撲滅運動を図っていた。太平洋戦争帰りのジョー・ティーグはLA市警の警部だがギャングのための仕事も請け負っている人物で、ギャングとの取引において用心棒を務めるよう、あるコメディアンから依頼を受けるのだったが…というのが第１話のプロット。

冒頭では1920年代のニューヨークが登場するので禁酒法の時代の話かな？と思いきや単に若い頃のバグジーが出てきただけで、舞台はあくまでも40年代のロサンゼルス。実際の事件や人物を追った本が原作になっているらしい。当時の雰囲気を出すのにそれなりに凝った工夫がされているものの、16ミリで撮影をして陰気な感じを出していた「ウォーキング・デッド」に比べると、全体的に小綺麗というか、いかにもセットとグリーンスクリーンの前で撮影してんな、という感が否めない。

観てていちばん引っかかったのはやはり主人公のジョーの立ち位置で、犯罪撲滅を狙う正義漢でもないし、汚職に完全に手を染めた悪徳刑事でもないし、どうも煮え切らないところがあって感情移入できないんだよな。警察とギャングのあいだで揺れ動く彼の姿が今後の大きなテーマになっていくのだろうけど、話の中心にぽっかりと穴が空いているような。

そのジョーを演じるのはジョン・バーンサル。「ウォーキング・デッド」から引き抜かれたキャスティングですかね。あとはニール・マクドノーとかエドワード・バーンズなどが出演している。バーンズが出ている時点で個人的にはアウトなのですが、第１話には登場してなかったかな？代わりにサイモン・ペッグがサエないコメディアンの役でゲスト出演していて、主人公たちよりもずっと良い演技をしております。

アメリカの評判もイマイチのようなので、「ウォーキング・デッド」並みのヒットは期待できないどころか、もしかしたら第１シーズン（全６話）こっきりになるんじゃないかとも思われる作品。サイモン・ペッグが主人公だったなら全話みるんだけどね…。
