「ハリー・ポッター」とか「キング・コング」とか、観たい映画がいっぱいあるんだけど、入場料に1800円も払うのがバカらしくて、日本に帰ってきてからは映画館にまだ足を運んでないのです。カナダじゃ500円以下で新作映画が観れてたからね。 んでもって最近は何故かイギリスのシットコムを山ほど入手して観てるわけですが、１ヶ月くらい前から観はじめた「ファーザー・テッド」を今日やっと全エピソード鑑賞した。これはアイルランドの架空の離れ小島「クラギー・アイランド」が舞台のコメディで、根は正直なんだけど意外と俗物な神父のテッドを主人公に、彼の同僚でひたすらボケをかますドゥーガルと、白痴気味で「酒！女！」としか叫ばないジャック、および彼らの住む家を管理するミセス・ドイルの４人が起こすドタバタがとにかく面白いのなんのって。

どちらかといえば前衛的な笑いをとっていた「THE OFFICE」や「I’M ALAN PARTRIDGE」に比べて、伝統的なシットコムの雰囲気が強いシリーズだけど、ジョークのテーマやタイミングが実に絶妙で、もう抱腹絶倒ものなのだ。個人的には、ブリティッシュ・コメディの金字塔「フォルティー・タワーズ」をも凌ぐ作品だと思う。テッドを演じるダーモット・モーガンが、最終回の収録直後に心臓発作で他界したことが本当に悔やまれる。

ジョークの大半はアイルランドの田舎性およびカソリックを風刺しているものの、あまり嫌みにならずにストレートに笑いをとってることが面白さの秘訣だろう。このシリーズが放送されてたときにアイルランドに住んでたけど、カソリックを侮辱してるなんて感じる人はいなくて、多大な人気を集めてましたぜ。
一般的にはユーロビジョン・ソング・コンテストにテッドが出場するエピソードが一番人気があるみたいだけど、中国系移民とのトラブルの話とか、バアさんたちに家を包囲されるゾンビ映画のパロディの話とかも非常に面白かった。
