ファンや批評家たちに絶賛されつつも（シャマランの映画版と一緒にするなよ）2008年に終了した、ニコロデオンのアニメ「アバター 伝説の少年アン」の続編シリーズ。
舞台となるのは前作から70年後の世界。風・土・火・水の４元素を自在に操ることのできる「アバター」となったアンによって世界の平和は取り戻され、長い年月のあとアンはその寿命を全うしていた。そして水の国に生まれた少女コラは次のアバターとなる才能を秘めた存在であり、アバターとして大成する修行を積むために大都市リパブリック・シティに向かうのだが、そこでは謎の仮面の男が率いる、反アバターの勢力が勃興していた…というようなプロット。
アンの息子とかも出てきて、前シリーズを観てないとちょっと話がつかみにくいところもあるものの、全体的にとても楽しめる内容になっている。前作は幼い少年のアンが主人公だったのでお子様向けの印象が強かったんだが、今回は主人公コラの年齢がハイティーンになったこともあり、より幅広い年齢層が楽しめるんじゃないかな。アクションありロマンスありコメディありの絶妙な脚本に加え、20世紀初頭の中国の都市をイメージした風景も非常に美しい。
そして圧巻なのはアニメーションの出来で、プロの格闘家を雇ったという格闘シーンなどは絵が動く動く。ジャパニメーションの影響を受けていることは間違いないんだが、日本のアニメでもここまで絵が動く作品って少ないんじゃないだろうか。よくある「口や目だけ動くシーン」などは皆無で、髪の毛とかもユサユサ動くあたり、かなりの労力がかかってるんじゃないかと。CGの使い方も巧いし。あと第１話ではゲスト声優になんとエヴァ・マリー・セイントを起用してました。
女の子の成長を描いた健全な冒険譚だし、これNHKとかで放送すればいいと思うんだけどね。日本はニコロデオン作品がなかなか普及しないのが残念なところです。
