10年ぶりくらいにシネマシャンテで観たよ。シネコンの座席に慣れてしまうとあそこの横幅はきついものがあったが、年配のお客さんで満席になってる光景は良かったですね。
ダルトン・トランボや赤狩り時代のハリウッドについてはそれなりに知ってるつもりだったが、それでもヘレン・ミレン演じるヘッダ・ホッパーのこととか知らなくて、いろいろ新しい発見がありましたね。その一方でこの人たちの経歴はどういうものなんだろう？と思ってウィキペディア片手に観たくなる衝動もありましたが。
ジェイ・ローチの初の非コメディ映画という説明もあるようだけど、あの人は最近HBOで「Recount」や「Game Change」といった実話のTVムービーをよく撮っているので、それの延長線にある作品と思って構わないだろう。
TVムービーよりは（おそらく）予算がふんだんに使えたのか、豪華なキャストがいろいろ出てまして、彼（彼女）らの演技によって手堅い作りの作品になっているなあと。ヘレン・ミレンや主演のブライアン・クランストンが相変わらず安定した演技を見せているほか、ルイ・CKやエル・ファニング、ダイアン・レイン、マイケル・スタルバーグ、ステーブン・ルートなどといった役者が好演していていい感じですね。
でも男優はみんな中年ばかりのせいか、みんな丸っこい体型になっていたような。おかげで普段は太っているダン・バケダールが相対的に痩せて見えたぞ。ジョン・グッドマンも「10クローバーフィールド・レーン」に続いてでっぷり太ってるので健康状態を心配してしまったけど、きょう公開された「Kong: Skull Island」の予告編を見たらちょっとスリムになってたので、大丈夫だよね…？ジョン・ウェインを演じるデビッド・ジェームス・エリオットも恰幅が良くなってて、クレジットを見るまで彼だと気付かなかった。つうかジョン・ウェインってあんなに太ってたっけ？
全体的な出来は前述したようなTVムービーの枠を超えるものではない無難なつくりになっているが、波乱に富んだ人物を題材にしていることと、優れた役者たちが揃っていることで十分に楽しめる作品になっている。実際のトランボは映画で描かれた以上の共産主義者でスターリンを尊敬してたらしいが、日本の共産党もこういう映画を使ってね、やんわりと協賛者を広めていってもいいんじゃないかと思ったりもするのです。
