「A History of Violence」読了

こないだデビッド・クローネンバーグが作った映画「ヒストリー・オブ・バイオレンス」の原作「A History of Violence」をやっと読む。10年くらい前に立ち読みしたときは最後のグロいシーンに結構ショックを受けたんだけど、今読んでみたらそうでもなかった。グロさに耐性ができたのかな。 ジョン・ワグナーがストーリー、ヴィンス・ロックがアートを担当。元来はDCコミックスの「パラドックス・プレス」というレーベルから出てたんだけど、このレーベルが無くなったんで現在は「Vフォー・ヴェンデッタ」と同じく「ヴァーティゴ」というレーベルから出版されている。ちなみにトム・ハンクス主演の「ロード・トゥ・パーディション」の原作もパラドックス・プレスから出ていた作品。アメコミはスーパーヒーローだけではないのですよ。

個人的にこの作品を読んで一番驚いたのは「ジョン・ワグナーが長いストーリーを手がけている！」ということ。ワグナーといえば、ほぼ全てのイギリス人コミック作家を輩出してきた雑誌「2000AD」をパット・ミルズと共に創刊し、さらにはカルロス・エズクエラと「ジャッジ・ドレッド」を創作した、イギリスのコミック界ではもう大御所的な存在なんだけど、2000ADのページを埋めるために「質より量」で作品を乱発していた人というイメージが強いので、８ページ以上のストーリー、ましてや300ページ近いものをきちんと書いていることに驚きを感じてしまうのです。そして「バイオレンス」のストーリーは急ぎすぎも中だるみもせず、実にうまいペースを保って進んでいく。ヴィンス・ロックのアートも最初はとっつきにくく感じられるものの、話の雰囲気に非常にマッチしたものになっている。

話の内容は詳しく書かないが、小さな町でのささいな暴力事件がさらなる事件を起こし、過去に起きた事件が明らかになり、それが大都市での対決へと結びついていくという、タイトル通りの「暴力の歴史」がリアルに語られていくさまは読み応え十分。主人公がやけに強いとか、20年も人を拷問するなんて出来んのかな、と思うところもあるけどね。

ちなみに映画版は結構ストーリーが違っているらしい。クローネンバーグは大好きなので、彼がどのように話を料理するのかが楽しみなところです。前作「スパイダー」はどうもイマイチだったけど、今回は期待してまっせ。
