マーク・ハミルがギーク心まるだしで監督・製作・主演した映画「COMIC BOOK: THE MOVIE」をDVDで観る。 作品の形式はいわゆる疑似ドキュメンタリー。高校教師で熱心なコミックファンの主人公ドナルド・スワン（ハミル）は、彼の大好きなコミック「コマンダー・カレージ」がハリウッドで映画化されることになったため、映画会社にコンサルタントとして雇われる。そして彼は映画の関係者や「カレージ」の原作者の孫たちを連れてコミック・コンベンションの製作発表会へと向かうものの、映画の内容が徹底的に「ハリウッド化」され、彼の愛する原作とはまるで別物にされることを知ってこれを阻止しようとするが…というのが大まかなプロット。
原作者の孫を演じるビリー・ウエストをはじめ、主な出演者はハミルの声優仲間で揃えられているほか、サンディエゴのコンベンションなどでカメオ出演するメンツの顔ぶれがすごい。スタン・リーやケヴィン・スミスといった「定番」をはじめ、ヒュー・ヘフナーやブルース・キャンベル、マット・グレーニング、ピーター・デイビッド、ブルース・ティム、ロイド・カウフマンなどなど。本来ならばマーク・ハミル自身がコンベンションの目玉になりそうなものだけど（だってルーク・スカイウォーカーだぜ）、スワン役になりきって有名人たちにインタビューする姿が見てて笑える。
低予算のビデオ用作品なので、映画としての出来は必ずしも優れてるとは言えず、映像が不鮮明だとか脚本が練りきれてないとかいった欠点もあるものの、それを補って余りあるくらいにコミックに対する愛情にあふれた内容なので、つい観てるうちに主人公に感情移入してしまう。この作品を面白いと思うかどうかで、観る人のギーク度が測れるかも。主人公がコマンダー・カレージのコスプレをして、製作発表会まで駆け抜けるラストには不覚にも感動してしまった。あと全米最大のコミック・コンベンションの様子を知るのにも格好の作品かと。
それにしてもビリー・ウエスト（「フューチャラマ」のフライ役の声優）があんな中年オヤジだとは知らなかった。
