昨年話題になってながらも見逃した映画を、チマチマと拾っていく次第であります。ポール・ラッドとエミール・ハーシュ主演のドラマ。
舞台は1988年のテキサス。前年に起きた山火事によって大きな被害を受けた森林公園の再建作業に関わるため、アルヴィンはガールフレンドの弟であるランスを連れて町を離れ、山奥において道路の整理作業をしていた。幼稚な振る舞いをするランスをあまり快く思っていなかったアルヴィンだが、週末に町に戻ったランスは女性関係のトラブルに遭遇してふさぎ込んでしまう。さらにアルヴィンもガールフレンドとの間に一悶着あり…というようなプロット。
画面に出て来るのはほぼこの２人だけということもあり、いわゆるブロマンスものではあるのですが、その一方では町に残してきた女性たちについてウジウジ悩む男たちの恋愛映画でもある。対象となる女性たちが出てこないという演出が特徴的かな。ちなみに「雪崩の王子様」という題名はストーリーと殆ど関係ありません。当然ながらドクター・アバランシェ（知ってる？）とも関係ないよ。
ストーリー自体はアイスランドの「Either Way」という映画のリメークらしいが、2011年に実際に山火事に遭った森林公園で撮影していることもあり、テキサスの荒廃した森というバックグラウンドがものすごく印象的に使用されている。焼け落ちた家のなかで残ったものを探す女性というのが登場するのだけど、彼女は役者ではなく本当にその家に住んでいた人で、ロケハン中にスタッフに発見されてそのまま映画に出ることになったらしい。ここらへん東北の震災でボランティアやったときの経験と重なって、いろいろ考えさせられましたね。
監督のデビッド・ゴードン・グリーンは最近だと「スモーキング・ハイ」とか大コケした「ロード・オブ・クエスト」といったおバカコメディを撮っていた印象が強いのでこういう作品を撮るのは意外かもしれないが、そもそもは南部を舞台にしたインディー映画を撮っていた人（よく知らんがそうらしい）ので、実はこっちのほうが「実の姿」であるそうな。次作もニコラス・ケイジ主演のダークなドラマなんだって。
アルヴィンを演じるポール・ラッドは口ヒゲに緑のシャツとオーバーオールという格好がルイージそのまんまであるのが難点だが、真面目な役を好演している。この人ってコメディ全開の演技するよりも、こういう真面目な演技のほうが似合うと思うのだが。ランスを演じるエミール・ハーシュはマリオ…でなくジャック・ブラックにしか見えなくて、子供っぽく文句たれながらヘビメタ聴いてる姿はまんまジャック・ブラックなのだが、大人になれないキャラをうまく演じている、と好意的に考えることにしましょう。
たった16日間で撮影されたということもあり、決して金のかかっている作品ではなく、ピンぼけ気味で手ブレを入れた撮影はあまり好きではないかな。とはいえテキサスの自然は荒廃したとはいえ美しく、ポストロックバンドのエクスプロージョンズ・イン・ザ・スカイによる音楽も効果的に用いられている。派手な展開があるわけでもなく観る人によって評価が分かれるかもしれないが、個人的にはいろいろ身につまされる作品でありました。
