ABCの新作シットコム。エディ・ホアンというTVパーソナリティの料理家がいるらしくて、その派手な言動はmomofukuのデイヴィッド・チャンみたいな感じなのかな。彼が書いた同名のベストセラーの自伝をもとにしたシリーズで、ナレーターもホアン本人が務めている。
舞台は1995年。台湾からやって来た移民のルイスは、自身のレストランを経営したいという夢を抱えて、ワシントンＤＣからフロリダへとやって来る。彼に付き添うのは妻のジェシカと、エディら３人の息子たち、およびエディの祖母。台湾文化よりもヒップホップに憧れる長男のエディは親が渡す台湾料理の弁当が気に入らず、それがもとで学校でトラブルを起こす始末。さらにルイスが開いたステーキハウスには客が入らず…というような展開。
ルイスを演じるのは「The Interview」のキム・ジョンウンことランダル・パーク。台湾系でなく韓国系だけどまあいいや。あの映画でいちばんいい演技をしてた彼ですが、ここでも陽気で呑気な父親を好演している。そしてジェシカ役のコンスタンス・ウーという女優さんがおれ好みの美人でいい感じ。あとは「NTSF:SD:SUV::」のポール・シアーが出てたけど、準レギュラー的な扱いになるのかな。
ルイスとジェシカの中国語訛りがちょっと強調されてる気もするが、アジア人をコケにしたような描写は特になし（タイトルとかにケチをつけてるウルサ方もいるようですが）。むしろ白人社会とのギャップに焦点を当てた内容になっている。おれも子供の頃に親と海外に住んでたりしたので、こういうのはちょっと感情移入できるのです。
つーかアジア人が主役のシットコムって、マーガレット・チョーの「All-American Girl」以来20年ぶりだそうですよ。だからこういうのには頑張って欲しいなあ。こないだの「EMPIRE」も黒人の視聴層にヒットして早くも第２シーズンの製作が決まったわけですが（しかも録画でなく皆でリアルタイムで観るほどの盛況ぶりらしい）、非白人のマイノリティが主役でも視聴率をとれる世の中になってきてるんじゃないかと。ジョークが滅茶苦茶おもしろいという内容ではないものの、こういうのは日本で放送されても良いんじゃないかと思うのです。
