傑作！「AVクラブ」では「ヒストリー・オブ・バイオレンス」ほどではない、というような評がされていたけど、個人的には原作からあらすじを事前に知っていた「ヒストリー」に対し、こちらのほうが見応えは多分にあったと思う。
第一印象としてはまず作り方が非常に手堅い。良い意味でメインストリーム的というか、無駄な部分をそぎ落とした良質のサスペンスになっている。またクローネンバーグ作品に共通する「肉体の変化」というテーマ（今回は体に経歴書として刻み込まれるイレズミ）に加え、「ヒストリー」で扱われた「生きる術としての暴力」および「アイデンティティの変化」というテーマが非常に巧みに昇華されている。ヴィゴ・モーテンセンが再び主演ということもあって「ヒストリー」の続編的なイメージがある作品だが、あちらで開拓されたアイデアが、さらにこの作品で実を結んだという感じ。そして数々のテーマをすべて担った主人公としてモーテンセンが相変わらず見事な演技を見せてくれる。今回は文字通り身体はってまっせ。ナオミ・ワッツは可も不可もなし。ヴァンサン・カッセル演じるドラ息子はちょっとステロタイプすぎたかな。あとタイトルにも関連している東欧女性の強制売春というサブプロットの、メインの話に対する絡み方がいまいち弱かったような気がする。ラストのナレーションはいらんよな。
クローネンバーグ初の全編海外ロケ（ロンドン）ということもあって、今までの彼の作品ともまた一風違った優れた作品になっている。ちなみにネット上だと「イースタン・プロミス（原題）」という表記が圧倒的に多いんだけど、原題なら「イースタン・プロミシーズ」と表記すべきじゃないか？細かいことですが。
