「THIS IS ENGLAND」鑑賞

日本じゃ殆ど無名の存在だが、イギリスで注目されている映画監督にシェーン・メドウスという監督がいて、派手なアクションとかCGIとは無縁の、ミッドランズ地方を舞台にした社会派作品をコツコツと作っている職人肌の監督なのであります。第２のケン・ローチになる存在じゃないかな。そんな彼の自伝的映画「THIS IS ENGLAND」がアメリカでも高い評価を受けていたのでさっそく観てみる。

舞台は1983年のイギリス。12歳の少年ショーンは父親をフォークランド紛争で亡くし、学校では友達ができずにいじめられる毎日だった。そんな彼はふとしたことからスキンヘッズの若者たちと友達になり、彼らの一員となって楽しく遊ぶようになる。しかしある日、彼らのリーダーだったコンボという男が刑務所から帰ってきた。刑務所でナショナル・フロント（イギリス国民戦線）の極右思想に感化された彼は、積極的に移民の排斥活動を行おうとしてショーンたちのグループを二分してしまう。コンボの側についたショーンは、自らも人種差別や犯罪活動に手を染めていくことになる…。というのが主なプロット。

俺もちょうどこの頃イギリスに住んでいたけど、あの当時の独特な雰囲気を的確に再現している点が素晴らしい。サッチャー政権のもとで失業者は増加し、フォークランドでは多くの兵士が殺され、冷戦の暗い雲がたちこめるなかナショナル・フロントは力を増していったんだよな。あとコンボとジャマイカ系スキンヘッドの微妙な関係とか（スキンヘッド文化はもともとジャマイカ系移民が始めた）の描写も興味深い。最近はイギリスでもスキンヘッズは減ってきたらしいが、１つのカルチャーをきちんと映像に収めたという意味では「さらば青春の光」に匹敵する傑作かと。
