「コーエン兄弟の作品、しかも『ファーゴ』なんてTVシリーズ化できんだろ」という大方の予想を見事にくつがえし、展開の読めない大傑作となったシリーズの第２シーズン。今回の舞台は1979年のミネソタとサウスダコタが舞台になっていて、前シーズンのプリクエルという扱いになっている。

1979年のサウスダコタはスーフォールズではゲルハルト一家が町の裏ビジネスを仕切っていたが、家長のオットーが心臓発作を起こしたことから外部のギャングたちが町を狙おうとしていた。そんななかゲルハルト家の末子のライは自分のビジネスの邪魔になりそうな判事を町から離れたダイナーで脅迫しようとするが、予定が狂って判事および二人の店員を射殺してしまい、自分は夜道をやってきた車に轢かれてしまう。ダイナーの事件を聞いて調査にあたる保安官のルーとハンク。一方で肉屋のエドはいつもどおり家に戻るが、そこでは妻のペギーが轢いたライが半死の状態でガレージに転がっていた…という設定。

シーズン１は雪の町での殺人という「ファーゴ」っぽさがまだ残ってたけど、今回は舞台が70年代ということもあり、かなり雰囲気の異なった内容になっている。スプリットスクリーンを多用した演出はずっと続くのかな？ライによる要領の悪い殺人とか、死体の片付けに四苦八苦するさまなどはむしろ「ブラッド・シンプル」に似ていると思う。しかし突然UFOが出てきたりして（いやホントに）、「ツイン・ピークス」っぽい展開もあるのだが、今後はたしてどうなっていくんでしょ。

前シーズンからキャストは一新されていて、パトリック・ウィルソン演じる保安官のルーが、シーズン１でキース・キャラダインが演じたダイナーの主人の若き頃、という設定。人を轢いても動じないサイコな人妻を演じるキルスティン・ダンストがクレジット上ではトップの扱いなので、彼女が主人公的な存在になるのかな。他にもジェフリー・ドノヴァンやテッド・ダンソン、ニック・オファーマン、ジェシー・プレモンズ、ブラッド・ギャレットといった他の番組なら主役を務めてるレベルの役者が勢ぞろいしてて結構すごい。さらにロナルド・レーガン役としてブルース・キャンベルも登場するらしいぞ。

話の展開がまったく分からないし、キャストも誰がどこまで生きてるのかも謎だが、前シーズンよりもさらにブラックなユーモアが増えているし、本国の批評家には絶賛されているようなので、今回もまた見逃せないシリーズになることは間違いないでしょう。
