主人公のスキップ・バスケッツはプロの道化師になるという情熱をもってフランスの道化師学校へと留学するものの、フランス語が一切できないという根本的な問題のため授業から脱落し、失意のもとに故郷であるカリフォルニアの片田舎ベーカーズフィールドへと戻ってくる。グリーンカード目当てで結婚してくれたフランス人の妻には金をせびられ、町のロデオ会場で道化師として働くことになるのだが、観客は彼の芸などには興味を示さず、暴れ牛に追いかけられる彼の姿を嘲笑するだけだった。そんななかバイク事故で知り合った保健員のマーサだけが彼に好意を持って接してくれるのだが…といったあらすじ。
主人公がいろいろ惨めな目に遭うという、いわゆるダウナー系のコメディです。原案者にルイCKが名を連ねているが、「Louie」以上に主人公が恵まれてないんじゃないかな。スキップの周囲の人間もみんな不幸せな感じで、マーサは頭の回転が遅くてスキップにもぞんざいに扱われているし、スキップの母親（ルイ・アンダーソンが女装して演じている）は典型的なホライトトラッシュといったところ。せいぜいスキップの双子の兄弟のデール（ガリフィアナキスが二役を演じてる）だけが怪しげなキャリア学校を経営して少し金をもっているくらいだし。
笑えるブラックジョークがある一方で、観ていてかなり気が滅入る内容だし、観る人を選ぶコメディだと思う。個人的にはダメ男の主人公にはやはり共感せざるを得なかったわけだが。しかし今後はどういう展開になっていくんだろう？
