今度のアカデミー賞にノミネートされてるドキュメンタリー。
メキシコの麻薬カルテルに対して、法の手を借りずに自分たちで対処することにした人々を追ったもので、アメリカのアリゾナではティム・ホーリーという男性が、メキシコではホセ・ミレレスという医師がそれぞれ自警団を結成し、カルテルの撲滅および麻薬の密輸の阻止のために活動するさまが紹介されていく。
ホーリーは崩壊家庭の出身で、自らも酒とドラッグに溺れていたが子供ができたことで更生し、きちんと職に就こうとするもののメキシコからの不法移民に職をとられ、やがて彼らが移民した背景にはカルテルの横暴があることに気づき、国境を守るために自警団を結成したというもの。決してレイシストのようには描かれていないし、夜中に荒野をパトロールしてたりするものの、カルテルのギャングに遭遇するわけでもなく、彼の行動にどこまで効果があるのかは微妙なところだったな。
対してメキシコのミレレスたちの状況は遥かに深刻で、麻薬カルテル（なぜか「テンプル騎士団」と名乗っている）が地元のビジネスを牛耳り、みかじめ料を払えない者は幼い子供も含めて一家皆殺しにされるという環境のなか、何もしてくれない政府を頼らずにミレレスたちは銃を手にして、ギャングたちと激しい銃撃戦を繰りひろげていく。捕まったギャングのメンバーが「叔父さんの仇だ！」とか言われて頭をボコボコ殴られているのが印象的であった。
また麻薬を製造しているカルテルのメンバーへのインタビューも行われているが、メンバーが自警団のなかに潜入しているとか、カルテルと政府がズブズブだとか、しまいには自警団の活動資金はカルテルが出しているなどといった、メキシコの深い闇を示唆するような話が語られていく。ミレレスたちの自警団も市民の人気を集めていく一方で政府には疎んじられ、ギャングなのかどうか不明な人々を拷問したり、仲間割れをしたりするほか、ミレレスも決して公明正大な人間ではないところが映されていき、最後に皮肉な結末を迎えることになる。
この作品の評価って概ね「アメリカ側のシーンって不要じゃね？」というもので、確かに命がけで銃撃戦を繰り広げてる自警団と、山のなかをうろついてる連中を同等に比べるのは無理があるかな。とはいえメキシコのシーンだけあればいい、というわけでもないので難しいところである。アメリカとメキシコの対比という点では「皆殺しのバラッド」のほうが優れてたかと。
