やあみんな！「IDIOCRACY（イディオクラシー）」っていう映画を知ってるかい？知ってる君は、俺みたいに海外の映画サイトをウロついてるオタクだね！ちょっとは外に出て遊ぼうぜ！…という哀しい冗談はさておき、去年ほとんど誰も観れなかった幻の映画「IDIOCRACY」を観た。

これは「ビーバス＆バットヘッド」や「キング・オブ・ザ・ヒル」といったアニメで知られるマイク・ジャッジが、異様なカルト人気を誇る作品「リストラ・マン」に続いて監督した実写映画。なんで去これが幻の映画かというと、いちおう劇場公開はされたものの配給会社のフォックスがいっさい何の宣伝もせず、トレーラーさえも作らずに（！）ごくごく少数の映画館で短期間公開してすぐに打ち切ってしまった、えらく不運な映画なのだ。なんでフォックスがこんな仕打ちをしたのかについては後で述べるが、まかりなりにもマイク・ジャッジはエミー賞受賞作の「キング〜」や「リストラ・マン」でフォックスにそれなりの利益をもたらしてるわけで、それをあんな露骨に邪険にするなんていくらなんでも非道いよなあ。

まあ単に「映画の出来が悪いから打ち切られた」という可能性も考えられなくはないんだが、俺はティーンエイジャー（「B＆BH）」）からサラリーマン（「リストラ・マン」）そして中年オヤジ（「キング〜」）の日常を的確にとらえるジャッジの才能は評価しているので、こないだ発売されたDVDをさっそく購入してみたんだが…

なにこれ、すげー面白いじゃん！

ルーク・ウィルソン演じるジョー・バウアーズは米軍に勤務するごく平凡な兵士。彼はあらゆる面で平凡であったため、逆にそれに目をつけられて軍の冷凍睡眠プロジェクトに参加させられる。彼はそこで一般人のリタという女性（実は売春婦）とともに冷凍カプセルで１年間の冬眠をする計画だったのだが、責任者が売春容疑で逮捕されたことからプロジェクトは人々に忘れられていき、なんと彼は500年もの冬眠をしてしまう。そして彼が目覚めた2505年には、そこはあらゆる人々の知的水準が著しく下がった世界があった。服や壁には広告がベタベタ貼られ、人々はトイレつきの椅子に座って流動食を食べながら一日中テレビを見て、医者や弁護士もとんでもないボンクラばかり。裁判は「ジャッジ・ジュディ」みたいな見世物ショーになりさがり、死刑はスタジアムにおいてモンスター・トラックと戦わされるというものだった。こんな世界に目覚めたジョーはふとしたことから逮捕されて刑務所に送られるものの、そこで受けた知能テストにおいて彼がこの世界では最高の知性を持っていることが判明。これによって彼は大統領（元プロレスラーでポルノ男優）から国の問題を解決するように頼まれるのだが…というのが大まかな話。

いちおう「The Marching Morons」というSF小説をちょっとベースにしてるらしいけど、「フューチャラマ」にも話は似てるかな。ジャスティン・ロングやトーマス・ヘイデン・チャーチもちょっと出てるでよ。「リストラ･マン」に比べてＣＧがふんだんに使われており、全体がゴミためと化した未来の都市の描写はなかなかリアル。１つの街ほどもある巨大なショッピングモールのシーンなんかは、「未来世紀ブラジル」の未来をさらに奇怪に歪めたような感じだ。

この作品の中心的なアイデアは何かというと、21世紀の現在において、学歴があってそこそこ収入があるようなカップルは経済的負担などを考えて子づくりに慎重になるけど、逆に無学で低所得の人たち（例えばいわゆるレッドネック）は後先も見ずにセックスばかりやってるから子だくさんになり、結局のところ未来の社会はこういった連中でいっぱいになり、知的水準はどんどん下がっていくだろうというもの。（詳しくはこのクリップを見よ）悪貨は良貨を駆逐するってやつか。日本でもヤンキー夫婦に限って子だくさんだったりするよね。

この予想が本当に当たるかは分からないけど（文章にすると選民思想みたいでイヤだな）、よくよく考えると劇中の未来社会で行われてることの大半は、アフリカやアジアあたりの教育水準が低い国で既に行われてそうだし、いまのアメリカ大統領とか欧米のリアリティー番組を見てると、500年も待たなくても人類みんなバカになりそうな気はする。でもこの映画では話が決して真剣にならず、とにかく最初から最後までジャンクカルチャーを徹底的に風刺してるのが非常に笑える。個人的には「40歳の童貞男」くらいに面白かったかな。

んでなんでこんな傑作が配給会社に無視されたかという話だけど、今のところフォックスはこの映画への処遇について公式なコメントを出しておらず、ファンのあいだではいろんな噂が飛び交っているようだ。いくつかの企業の描写（例えばスターバックスが風俗店になってる）に関して訴訟を恐れたなんて話もあるみたいだけど、これって単に例によって「会社のお偉いさんがバカな判断をした」という理由によるものだと思うんだけど、どうなんだろう。フォックスといえば「ボラット」の前例もあるしね。でもこれだけ面白い映画なので、ぜひ日本では劇場公開して欲しいところです。
