若き日のシェイクスピアを描いたTNTの新シリーズ。これBBCかどこかの番組かと思いきや、TNTオリジナルの作品なのですね。例えばThe CWがティーンの視聴者目当てに、プリンセスが主人公の時代劇「Reign」を放送したりするのは分かるのですが、どちらかといえば無骨な番組が多いTNTが、こんな時代劇を放送してどうするんだろう？
物語は20代のシェイクスピアが劇作家としてロンドンでの成功を求めて、妻子を残してストラットフォードを離れるところから始まる。そしてロンドンにたどり着いた彼はツテを使って劇場を運営するジェームズ・バーベッジのもとに赴き、ひょんなことから新しい劇の脚本を担当することになる。しかし当時のロンドンは当局によるカソリック狩りが激化しており、カソリックのシェイクスピアにとっては危険な場所であった…というようなあらすじ。
ロンドン行きの場面でザ・クラッシュの「ロンドン・コーリング」が流れ、そのあとにはザ・ジャムの「ザッツ・エンターテインメント」がかかる演出からも分かるように、時代考証とかは二の次で、かなり現代風にアレンジされたシェイクスピアの物語となっている。劇場の観客はフェイスペイントをしたパンクスみたいな格好だし、作家たちは酒場でフリースタイルの勝負とかやってたりすんの。
まあシェイクスピアの劇もそれなりに下品なネタが入ってたりするのはよく知られてるが、当時はこうも乱痴気騒ぎが行われてたんですかね。おれ学生時代に授業で文章を無理やり読まされたのが嫌で、シェイクスピアってそんなに詳しく無いのですが（同じ理由でバートランド・ラッセルも嫌いです）、クリストファー・マーロウとは知人の仲だったんだっけ？番組中ではマーロウ（上の写真の左側）が彼のライバルのような扱いで出てきてました。
エピソードの監督は「エリザベス」のシェーカル・カプールで、こういう時代劇はお手の物ですかね。原案者および脚本家はバズ・ラーマン作品で知られるクレイグ・ピアースなので、舞台での歌や踊りはラーマン作品っぽいと言えるのかな。またシェイクスピアを演じるローリー・デイビッドソンって新人俳優らしいが、傍にはユエン・ブレムナーやコルム・ミーニーといった俺好みの役者が出ています。
第１話を観た限りでは、面白いかというと決してそんなわけではないのだけど、最近の（アメリカの）新番組のなかでは異色な存在だと思うので、もしかしたら後になって大化けするかもしれない。それまでTNTの視聴者が興味持ってくれればの話ですが。
