コメディ・セントラルの新番組。「コルベアー・レポー」と「ナイトリー・ショー」に続く、「デイリーショー」からの３つ目のスピンオフ番組。

司会は先日まで「デイリーショー」に「特派員」の一人として出演していたジョーダン・クレッパー。ジョン・スチュワートが司会やってたときから番組にいたベテランだし、トレバー・ノアが病欠したときは代理で司会を務めていたナンバー２的な存在だったので、今回晴れて自分で番組を持つことになったわけだ。企画にはスチュワートもノアも絡んでいるよ。

「デイリーショー」でのクレッパーはロブ・コードリーやジェイソン・ジョーンズに続く「頭の回転の鈍い白人」というような役回りだった。番組で数少なくなった「白人男性の出演者」という立場を利用して、トランプ支持者の集会で参加者にインタビューを行い、支持者の怒りを買いかねないキツい冗談を彼らの前でサラっととばす腕前がなかなか見事な人であったのです。

かつて「コルベア・レポー」でスティーブン・コルベアはブッシュ政権支持の保守系コメンテーターというキャラを演じたが、この番組でのクレッパーはさらに時代にあわせ、いわゆる「オルト・ライト」の司会者という設定で、メインストリーム・メディアによるフェイクニュースのウソを暴く人、というキャラクターを演じている。

日本でもマイロ・ヤノプルスとかトミ・ラーレンといったオルト・ライトのコメンテーターはそこそこ知られてるが、クレッパーのキャラのモデルになってるのは「インフォウォーズ」というサイトやラジオ番組をやっているアレックス・ジョーンズというオッサン。ヒラリー・クリントンは宇宙人の子供を産んだ！というようなズブズブの陰謀論を繰り広げているアレな人だがなぜかトランプ支持者には人気があって、先日のピザゲート事件も彼がデマを拡散していたような。

そんなジョーンズばりにクレッパーは突拍子もない陰謀論を述べたりするのですが、事前の報道によってクレッパーが自分の真似をすることを知ったジョーンズが怒りを自分の番組でぶちまけており、その映像をさらにクレッパーが茶化すという展開が第１回目では繰り広げられていました。

番組にはクレッパーのほかにも、「デイリーショー」の特派員のごときサブの出演者が何人か出てくるほか、番組の後半にはゲストが登場してクレッパーとトークをする構成になっていた。

第１回目を観た印象としては、やはりまだこなれてない感じがするし、過激なキャラクターを演じるというネタがどこまで長続きできるかな、という気もする。しかし人種差別をメインに扱ったためにどうしても真面目にならざるを得なかった「ナイトリー・ショー」が比較的早めに終了してしまったことを考えると、こういうはっちゃけたキャラで勝負するのも悪くはないかと。

不幸にも「オルト・ライトのキャラ」というのは非常に今の時代を反映しているわけで、それをコメディに昇華させるのは難しいかもしれないけど、「コルベア・レポー」のような成功をすることに期待しましょう。
