今年のFOXサーチライトによるアカデミー候補作品だったはずが、そのお株は「スリー・ビルボード」と「シェイプ・オブ・ウォーター」に奪われ、日本公開もいつになるか分からないから（7月？）観てしまったよ。

女子テニス界の草分け的選手であるビリー・ジーン・キングを主人公にした作品で、70年代初頭においてキングは世界的な大会で活躍する選手であったが、当時のテニス界は男女の賞金の格差が激しく、女性のテニスは軽視されて男性よりも圧倒的に少ない賞金が与えられていた。それに憤慨したキングは女性選手だけのツアーを開催し、スポンサーもつけてそれなりに人気を博する。一方40年代に活躍した男性選手のボビー・リッグスはギャンブルで私生活に問題を抱えていたが、資金を得る方法として女性選手との試合を起案し、キングに試合を持ちかける。そのギミックっぽさを嫌ったキングに試合を拒否されたリッグスは、キングのライバルであるマーガレット・コートと勝負をして圧勝し、さらにキングとの勝負を要求する。このままでは女性選手の名誉にかかわることになると感じたキングはリッグスの挑戦を受け入れ、ふたりは全米が注目するなか男女の勝負に挑むのだった…というあらすじ。

女性選手が男性と同様の資格を得ることができるようキングが奮闘する一方で、結婚している身でありながらもヘアドレッサーの女性と恋に落ち、自分がレズビアンであることに自覚していく姿が描かれている。実際はこの女性とのちに破局して訴訟を起こされて大スキャンダルになってスポンサーを失ったり、保守的なクリスチャンであるマーガレット・コートには女性との関係を非難されたりといろいろあったらしいが、そこらへんは映画では扱われず、あくまでも恋とウーマンリブのために頑張る女性の話になっています。

ビリー・ジーン・キングを演じるのはエマ・ストーン。以前は化粧の濃い人だなというイメージがあったけど、今回はすっぴんか薄化粧にして、体を張った役を演じています。対するボビー・リッグスを演じるのがスティーブ・カレルで、これがリッグス本人にえらく似ていて気色悪いくらい。どちらもスタントを使ってるとはいえ、テニスの試合のシーンはなかなか盛り上がっていいですよ。あとはビル・プルマンやエリザベス・シュー、アラン・カミングといったベテラン俳優が脇を固めています。

なおサラ・シルバーマンが女子選手のツアーのマネージャーみたいな役を演じているのだけど、彼女がスポンサーとして連れてくるのがタバコ会社のフィリップ・モリス。まあこれは史実なんだが、「スポンサーを喜ばせるためにタバコを吸ってね」みたいなセリフもあって、最近のハリウッド映画にしては珍しくタバコが大きく扱われた作品でした（クレジットでは例によって「タバコ会社から一銭ももらってません」と出るが）。

話としてはベタな展開だし、典型的なフィールグッド映画ではあるものの、観て楽しくなれるんだからそれはそれでいいじゃないの。昨年の「ドリーム」が好きな人はこれも楽しめると思う。話のテーマだって過去のものとは思うなかれ、例えばサッカーなどでは男女間の給料の差が激しいと問題になっているのに、それが当然だという男性の意見もヤフコメあたりでざくざく見かけるわけで、これを観て男女間の格差について改めて考えるのも良いかと。
