邦題はまんま「ラッキー」で日本では3月公開。昨年91歳にして亡くなった名優ハリー・ディーン・スタントンの最後の主演作にして実質的な遺作。

アメリカの片田舎に住む老人ラッキーは高齢ながらも比較的健康で、彼を気にかけてくれる町の住民に止めろと言われながらも、タバコを日に何本も吸うようなガンコ老人だった。しかしある日自宅で倒れたことで、自分にも死がいずれやってくることを彼は悟り、それに恐れを抱きながらも彼なりの人生を送ろうとするのだった…というあらすじ。

いわゆる難病ものとかではなく、大きな展開があるわけでもなく、ただラッキーの日常が淡々と描かれる内容になっている。一度倒れたとはいえラッキーは酒場でケンカを売ろうとするほどピンピンしてるし、老人介護とも無縁のまま、人生の終わりに近づいた男性の話が語られていく。

つうかこれスタントンのために作られたような映画なんですよ。監督も脚本家もこれが初仕事だし、スタントンのために皆が協力して撮った作品という感じ。彼が実際に海軍で沖縄戦の戦車揚陸艦に勤務していたこととかも脚本に組み込まれているし、電話の受話器を持って顔の見えない誰かと長々と話すシーンは「パリ、テキサス」のオマージュだろうか。さらにはデビッド・リンチばりの奇妙なシーンもあったりするよ。個人的には「ストレイト・ストーリー」で出てきたスタントンのキャラの後日談のように感じました。

その初の監督業を行ったのが、ハリウッドの渡辺久信ことジョン・キャロル・リンチ。小難しいセリフが多いところは監督に慣れてないっぽいな、と思う一方で、ベテラン俳優だけあって演出は手堅かったです。

さらにキャストも豪華で、スタントン絡みなのか珍しくデビッド・リンチが役者として出演もしている。彼の飼っているリクガメが逃げたというのが１つのプロットになっていて、俺らは老衰で死んでもカメさんはさらに長生きするんだよな、という話になっている。さらにはエド・ベグリー・Jr.やロン・リビングストン、トム・スケリット（「エイリアン」つながりだ！）なんかも出てきます。スケリットは元海兵隊員という設定で、スタントンとともに沖縄戦における日本人の悲惨な状況を語るところは見ていてちょっとドキドキしました。あと意外だったのは「ディープ・スペース・ナイン」のヴィック・フォンテーンことジェイムズ・ダレンが出ていたことで、結構久しぶりに顔を見たのだけど、この映画のプロデューサーが「DS9」のアイラ・スティーブン・ベアーなのでその繋がりかな。

数年前に読んだインタビューではスタントンの記憶力もかなりおぼつかないものになっていて、今回もちゃんと演技できるのかいな、と観る前には思ってたのですが完全な杞憂でした。体はヨボヨボとはいえ枯れた名演技を見せてくれるし、やはりあの顔がいいですね。

この映画が公開される２週間前に残念ながらスタントンは他界してしまったわけだが、こんな主演作を最後に作ってもらえて、幸せだったんじゃないかな、彼。
