ついにこの日がやってきてしまった。アメコミを読み始めた頃、英語がろくに分からない子供にとっても、マーベル作品の１ページ目に乗っている「Stan Lee Presents」の言葉は印象的であり、マーベルを統括しているこのスタン・リーって偉い人なんだな、と思ったものです。
90年代になってインターネットで情報が入ってくるようになると、スタン・リーの経歴や功績だけでなく、彼がいかにアーティストを搾取していた山師だったとか、実際にキャラクターを考案したのは彼でなくアーティストたちであったとか、彼のことを否定的に見る意見も目にするようになったと思う（俺もずいぶん感化された）。ただ大学の卒論でアメコミの歴史について書いたとき、やはり1961年のファンタスティック・フォーに始まり、スパイダーマンやアイアンマン、ソーやデアデビルといった人気キャラクターたちを数年のあいだに怒涛のペースで生み出していった労力を改めて実感して畏敬の念を抱いたものだが、その原動力ってやはりスタン・リー自身だったのですね。
アメコミの読者が、実際に動いて話せるコミックスの「顔」としてスポークスマンを欲しており、彼もまたその役に自分が徹するべきことを自覚していたのは、マーベル作品が人気を博してきた際に自分の外見をガラリと変えたことからも分かるだろう。しかし彼は決して狡猾なビジネスマンではなく、00年代にはむしろ周りによってきた山師たちの口車にのせられて数々のビジネスを立ち上げ、ことごとく失敗させた人であった。
これだけ長く生きれば、その功績については評価が分かれるところもあるだろうが、彼はやはりマーベルの顔であり、アメコミの顔であり、数多くのファンをアメコミ（およびアメコミ映画）に惹きつけるのには唯一無二の存在であった。合掌。
