アメリカでこないだ公開されたばかりの作品だけどな、昔のツテを使って合法的に観てしまったのだよ。ふはははは。
舞台となるのは1944年、オーバーロード作戦ことノルマンディー上陸のとき。ボイス二等兵たちは敵陣にパラシュートで降下して古い教会の上にある無線施設を破壊する任務を帯びていたが、乗っていた飛行機が被弾したことで予定よりも前の地点に落下。そこで彼らはフランス人の女性に出会い、彼女の家に隠れることになる。そして外に偵察に出たボイスはそのまま混乱に紛れて教会のなかに入り込むが、そこで彼が目にしたのはおぞましき人体実験がされている設備だった…というあらすじ。
ボイスは黒人兵士という設定だが、ご存知のように第二次大戦中は黒人と白人が一緒の部隊なぞ存在しなかったわけで、歴史考証などは全く関係ない作品です。というか内容はものすごく単純で、
ゾンビ！ナチス！ゾンビ！ナチス！
というもの。要するにゾンビを操るナチスと戦う連合軍のお話で、昔だったらウーヴェ・ボルあたりがとびつきそうな題材だが、こちらはJJ・エイブラムスのバッド・ロボット製作ということもあり爆発シーンなどはそれなりに予算のかかったものになっている。ストーリーはものすごくシンプルだけど。
なお劇中のゾンビはいわゆる屍体喰らいではなくて、教会の地下で発見された謎の液体を使った人体実験を重ねて開発されたもので、死んだ人間を生き返らせることができるものの、怪力になって凶暴化するという代物。生物兵器として使うつもりらしいが、命令をろくに聞けないのだから使い物にならんだろうなあ。
話の前半は例によって主人公たちが不気味な環境に置かれるさまが描かれるのだが、こちらはナチスゾンビが早く見たいわけで、展開がまどろっこしいといえばまどろっこしい。なんか話のテンポが悪いのよな。後半になってからはお待ちかね、ナチスやゾンビたちとの格闘が始まるので見ごたえはあるかな。これ何かのゲームで見たよね？というシーンも出てくるけど。あと連合軍が５人くらいしかいないのに、数で圧倒しているナチスがやけに弱いのはご愛嬌。
主人公のボイスを演じるジョヴァン・アデポって、「FENCES」で一家の息子を演じてた人か。ナイーブな彼に対して無骨な部隊長を演じるのがワイアット・ラッセルで、あとはピルウ・アスベックとかボキーム・ウッドバインなどが出ています。監督のジュリウス・エイヴリーって今度は「フラッシュ・ゴードン」のリメイクを撮るみたい？
まあ完全にB級映画のノリの作品なのだが、こういうのが好きな人たちにはいいんじゃないですか。観た後に何か心に残るかと聞かれると微妙なところだけど。
