ルネ・ラルーの作品のストーリーテリングって日本人のテイストからすると徹底的に「何か」が欠けているところがあって、それはそれで異国情緒というかセンス・オブ・ワンダーの感じを生み出しているんだが、この作品ではそれがいまいち弱いかな。もしかしたらこれはアニメーションの出来が良いことに起因してるのかもしれなくて、「ファンタスティック・プラネット」では動きの少ない絵本のような作画スタイルにおいて人間が狩られ殺されていく描写がとてつもなくインパクトがあったけど、この作品はアニメの出来がいいだけに逆に「見慣れた」感じがしてしまうのかもしれない。それでもガンダーラの奇妙な動植物とかミュータントの描写は、日本のアニメじゃまず目にしないものなので見てて楽しいけどね。
