古典的傑作「狩人の夜」を観る。
いいなあ、こういう映画。何と言っても詐欺師かつ殺人鬼を演じるロバート・ミッチャムの演技が凄い。右手に「LOVE」左手に「HATE」というイレズミをした彼が、黒のスーツにパリッと身を固めつつ、バリトンの効いた声で信仰について語りながら善良な人々を騙していくさまは実に圧倒的。天性の詐欺師というのはこういった感じで人を欺いていくんだろうね。
彼の毒牙にかかる寡婦のシェリー・ウィンタースもこの頃は若くて非常に綺麗。ミッチャムの犠牲となり湖の底で冷たくなってゆらぐ姿も妖しく見えるほど。彼女がいなくなって取り残された子供たちがミッチャムの魔の手から逃れる部分はちょっと中だるみするけど、後半になってからはライフルを抱えたリリアン・ギッシュとミッチャムによるせめぎ合いが見応えあり。単なる勧善懲悪の物語ではなく、子供に残る精神的トラウマなんかもうまく表現しているところもいい。
あと照明の使い方も非常にうまくて、特に寝室のシーンで尖った天井に映える光と影のコントラストがとても象徴的でいい感じ。こういう演出は最近のカラー映画では滅多に見られなくなっちゃいましたね。
