それなりに良い評判を聞いていたハロルド・ライミス監督の「アイス・ハーヴェスト 氷の収穫」を観る。確かに面白い、良く出来たフィルム・ノワール。
舞台はカンザス州ウィチタのクリスマス。マフィアとつながりのある弁護士のチャーリー（ジョン・キューザック）は相棒のヴィック（ビリー・ボブ・ソーントン）とともにマフィアの金を横領し、街の外へ高飛びしようとするものの、悪天候のため一人で時間をつぶす羽目に。そんなとき不運にもマフィアの手下が街に来たり、泥酔した友人の面倒を見ているうちに物事は意外な展開に発展していき…といった感じの作品。ブラックな展開のなかにシュールなコメディが多分に含まれていて、コーエン兄弟のサスペンス作品に良く似た雰囲気があるかな。チャーリーとヴィックとマフィアたちによる心理的な駆け引きもスリル十分だし、クリスマスの飾りが輝く街と雨と氷にまみれた郊外の対比も美しい。当然ながらファム・ファタールも出てくるぞ。
主人公のチャーリーも含めて登場する人物はみんな人生に失敗したようなダメ人間で、現状からの脱出を願って大金を手にしようとするわけだが、あまり話は湿ったものになりすぎずにサクサクと進み、89分という短い尺のなかで非常にタイトな展開を見せてくれる。日本だけでなくアメリカでもあまり知られてないような映画だけど、フィルム・ノワール好きの人にはお勧めしたい佳作。
