立花理佐からシャキール・オニールまで、古今東西さまざまな実在人物に絡めたゲームが発売されてきたけど、まさかダニエル・ジョンストンのゲームを目にする日が来ようとは思わなんだ。
こないだiPhone／iPod touch向けに発売された「Hi, How Are You」というゲームがそれで、悪魔にさらわれた愛しの女の子を救うためにカエルのジェレマイア君が障害をものともせずにピョンピョン跳ねて進んでいくというもの。ジョンストンの歌をバックに、彼の描いたキャラがあちこち動き回る様は見ていて非常に楽しい。いくつか設定されている目標を達成すると彼のイラストを見ることができる、なんてのもジョンストン愛に満ちているのでございます。
ゲームとしての出来も秀逸で、ジェレマイアを操作して3Dのフィールドに敷かれたパネルの上を制限時間内に跳んでいくというのは「パックマン」とか「マーブル・マッドネス」を彷彿させるかな。操作方法やカメラの回転などもよく出来ている。これで（限定期間）99セントというのは安いな。ただし逆にゲーム性が強すぎて制限時間が結構シビアで、ジョンストンの歌をゆっくり聴きながら遊べるユルめのゲームではない。
このゲームはNYタイムズでも紹介されてたけど、オースティンの２人のファンが１年半かけて製作したものなんだとか。ゲームの製作というと億単位のコストがかかるような気がしてたけど、iPhoneなどの登場によりこうして草の根的な感じで作られたものが世界中で販売できるようになったのは好ましいことですね。
