アラスカの荒野に棲む、小型トラックほどもあるようなグリズリー・ベアに魅せられて13度の夏を彼らとともに過ごし、結局ガールフレンドとともにグリズリーに喰われてしまった自然愛好家ティモシー・トレッドウェルの姿を追ったドキュメンタリー「GRIZZLY MAN」を観る。監督はヴェルナー・ヘルツォーク。音楽をリチャード・トンプソンがやっていた。 トレッドウェルのことをヘルツォークが知ったのは彼の死後のことであり、彼が殺された現場の開設から始まるこのドキュメンタリーには死の影が常につきまとっている。作品の大部分はトレッドウェルが熊たちとともに撮った映像で構成されており、トレッドウェル本人が画面に出てきて躁病患者のごとく熊への愛を語り、必要とあれば何テイクも撮って自分の主張を述べ、熊のためなら殺されてもいいと話す彼の姿が興味深い。失敗した役者でアル中だった彼は熊とのふれあいに生きがいを見いだし、彼らに名前をつけて擬人化していき、学術的に見れば問題のあるような親密さをもって熊たちと接していく。これに対し「人間と自然の関係は一線を越えてはならないものであり、これが破られれば人は代償を支払わなければならない」という登場人物の１人の言葉が印象的だ。

トレッドウェルの口調は明らかに自己賛美的で、自分の愛情を自然は理解してくれていると本気で信じているところがあるわけで、己のエゴをもって自然に立ち向かうその姿は「アギーレ／神の怒り」におけるクラウス・キンスキーに通じるものがあるかな。両者ともブロンドだし。そしてナレーターも務めるヘルツォークはトレッドウェルに同情的であるものの、必ずしも彼の意見にすべて同意しているわけではなく、人間と自然の間にはただ混沌があるのみだと語っている。なおトレッドウェルが撮った一連の映像が、彼というキャラクターを主人公にした一種の映画となってしまっていることに、ヘルツォークは映画人として惹かれたんだとか。単なる自然賛美や故人の業績紹介なんかではなく、人間と自然の関係の複雑さを突いたドキュメンタリーだと思う。

ちなみに検死医が途中で出てくるんだけど、やや演技のかかった口調で、トレッドウェルの死体の状況を瞬き１つせずに語るその姿は実にヤバくて怖いのです。
