「摩天楼を夢みて」鑑賞

アメリカでは名作として様々なところで言及されるものの日本では知名度の低い作品って結構あって、これもその１つになるんじゃないかな。

デビッド・マメットの戯曲を映画化したもので、ニューヨークからフロリダの土地をテレマで売りつけるような胡散くさい不動産会社で働くサラリーマンたちの悲哀を描いたもの。ある雨の日に本社からやってきた上役に「テメーらもっと業績を出せ！売上が１位になった者にはキャデラックをやる！２位にはキッチンナイフのセットだ！しかし３位以下のものはクビ！」というアメとムチをもらった４人のエージェントたちは、クビになってたまるかということで必死に売り込みをかけるものの、その晩に事務所に泥棒が入って…というような話。

とにかくキャストが豪華で、アル・パチーノを筆頭にジャック・レモンやケヴィン・スペイシー、エド・ハリス、アラン・アーキン、アレック・ボールドウィン、ジョナサン・プライスといったアカデミー賞俳優たちが勢揃い。特に老いたエージェントを演じるジャック・レモンの演技が素晴らしく、シリアスな演技も出来る彼の力量を再認識した次第です。こんな濃い面子がお互いに罵詈雑言を浴びせながら仕事をしていくわけだが、俺も上司にあんな悪口言ってみたいものだなあ。

マメットの作品だけあってセリフがやたら多いのと、エージェントたちの仕事の仕組みが分かりにくい点はあるが、ボヤいてばかりいるエージェントたちが電話をかけると豹変してカモを狙う姿はなかなか興味深い。必ずしも期待していたほどの作品ではなかったものの、名優たちの手堅い演技が観たい人にはおすすめ。なお邦題はまったく内容と関係なかったぞ。
