アンダーグラウンド・コミックの始祖、ロバート・クラムが旧約聖書の「創世記」を描いた本。
なぜクラムが聖書を？というのは誰でも考えることで、アンダーグラウンド・コミックに影響を与えたベイジル・ウルヴァートンが晩年に宗教に目覚めて聖書の物語を描いた例が過去にはあるけれど、クラムの場合はそうした信仰の目覚めみたいなのがあったわけではなく、むしろ「聖書は神の言葉などではなく、人間の言葉だと私は考えている。それが長年のうちに聖職者たちによって編集され、彼らにとって都合のいい内容に変えられてきたのだ」と序文で明記している。どうも最初はアダムとイブの話だけを描く予定だったのが、聖書の話に興味を持つようになって５年かけて「創世記」を描きあげることになったらしい。
クラムが聖書を人間の言葉だと考えているからってアンチ宗教のような解釈は一切されておらず、むしろ表紙に「NOTHING LEFT OUT!」と書かれているように、「創世記」の出来事をすべて残らず緻密に描いた内容になっている。執筆にあたっては複数の版の聖書を研究し、当時の人物の衣装なども調べ上げる懲りようだったとか。
そして中を読んでみると分かるんだが、「創世記」で語られる物語は殺人・姦淫・裏切り・妬み・権力争いなどなど、今までクラムが描いてきたコミックと実は内容があまり大差なかったりする！白髪の老人という古典的な姿で描かれる神様（焼けた肉がお好き）は最初のほうは自分の創ったアダムとイヴを追放したり、洪水で人物の滅亡を図ったりとかなり理不尽な行為を重ねているものの、やがて人の夢とかに出てきて理不尽なお告げを与える存在という裏方にまわり、話はむしろノア・アブラハム・イサク・ヤコブ・ヨシュアといった男たちの（必ずしも宗教的ではない）年代記へと変わっていく。
そこで語られる話においては、割礼されていない男や子供を生まない女はまっとうな人間として見なされないし、父を騙して兄の代わりに祝福を受けたヤコブが公明な人間として描かれるなど、現代の観点からすると疑問に思われる箇所がいろいろ出てくるわけだが、当時のものの考えを知ることができるのが面白い。またクラム自身が奇妙に思った箇所については最後に解説がつけられていて、そもそも当時は女性を上位とする文化が栄えていたものの、やがて家父長制が台頭してくるようになり、それに合わせて聖書が書き換えられたために物語に歪みが生じたという推測をしているのが非常に興味深い。
何世代にも渡る物語が200ページ以上にびっしりと描かれているのはなかなか圧巻。クラムのイラストの素晴らしさは説明する必要もあるまい。いかんせんボリュームが大きいうえに話が淡々としているので読み進めるのには根気がいるかな。ロバート・クラムの入門書（あるいは聖書の入門書）としては必ずしもお薦めできないが、彼のファンならぜひ手にとってほしい大作。ニューヨーク・タイムズのベストセラー・リストを独走していることから察するに、本国ではクラムのファン以外にも好評をもって受け入れられているみたい。
