主人公のマークは40代になっても恋人がおらず、何をやってもサエない小太りのダメ男。仕事をクビになった彼は家賃が払えずにアパートを追い出されそうになるが、有り金をすべて降ろそうと向かった銀行で頭のなかが突然ひらめき、歴史上の誰もが思いつかなかった「ウソをつく」ということをやってのける。周りの人は彼が口にすることはすべて真実だと思ってしまうため、ウソをつくことで巨額の富を手にするマーク。さらに彼は意中の女性であるアンナにウソを使って近づこうとするが、老人ホームにいる自分の母親が危篤状態になったことをデート中に知らされる。死んで無に消えることを恐れる母親にウソをつき、死後の世界では誰もが幸せになると伝えるマーク。こうして母親は安心して息を引き取ったものの、そのウソが世界中に広まったことから、死後の世界について知りたい人々がマークのもとに押しかけてきてしまう…というのがおおまかなプロット。

話のヒロインであるアンナをジェニファー・ガーナーが演じるほか、ルイスCK、ジョナ・ヒル、ティナ・フェイ、クリストファー・ゲスト、ジェイソン・ベイトマン、ジェフリー・タンバーなどといった現在のコメディ界を代表する面子がいろいろ登場するのは立派。さらにはフィリップ・シーモア・ホフマンやエドワード・ノートンなんかもチョイ役で出てるぞ。ただし主人公の恋敵を演じるロブ・ロウが「ハンサムな男」という設定はどうよ。ずいぶん肌荒れがひどかったぞ。

アメリカでは公開時に「宗教にケンカを売っている！」とちょっと話題になったらしいが、確かに主人公が皆を説得するために「空にいる万能の人」の話をデッチあげたり、悪いことを３回やると天国に行けなくなるなんて話を説いたりして不本意ながら宗教を築き上げてしまうあたりは宗教の風刺になっているかな。ただ風刺としても恋愛ものとしても中途半端なところが多くて、90分ほどの短尺ながら話があちこちにフラついて一貫性に欠けてしまったのが残念。

コメディとはいえ腹を抱えて大笑いするようなタイプのものではなくて、シュールな設定の世界でオフビートなジョークが展開されていくさまは、60〜70年代のイギリスのコメディ、特にリンゼイ・アンダーソンの「オー！ラッキー・マン」あたりを連想させたかな。笑えはしなくても話がツマらないところはないし、悪くはない小品。これでジャヴェイスは監督としてもハリウッド・デビューしたわけで、次回作の「Cemetery Junction」にも期待したいな。
