「ドニ・ダーコ」のリチャード・ケリーが、ジャンル映画のネタの宝庫であるリチャード・マシスンの短編をもとに作ったもの。この原作は既に「トワイライト・ゾーン」でも一度映像化されてるんだとか。
（以下ネタバレあるかも）

舞台は1976年のリッチモンド。ノーマとアーサーの夫妻はウォルターという息子とともに幸せな生活を送っていたが、経済的には困窮していた。そんなある日、彼らのもとにボタンがついた箱が送り届けられる。不思議に思う彼らのところにスチュワードと名乗る、顔に大きな傷を負った老人が現れ、箱に関する話を伝える；「箱についたボタンを押せば100万ドルが手に入る。しかしあなたたちの知らない誰かが命を失うことになる」と。彼の話を不気味に思うノーマとアーサーだが、ついにノーマがボタンを押してしまい…というようなプロット。

1976年当時のデザインのほか画面の色調とかカメラワークから察するに、これって70年代のSF／ホラー映画のパスティーシュになってるのかな。ただああいうのはテレビ東京で90分以下にカットされたやつを観るのが楽しいのであって、２時間近い尺で１つのプロットを延々と映していくのは厳しいものがあるなあ。NASAの火星探査の話とかが絡んできて、意外と真面目なSF映画になるか？と思いきやそうはならず、３つのゲートの選択の意味もよく分からないまま話が進み、どうも微妙なところに話が着地して終わったような。主人公たちが自分たちの運命についていろいろ情報を得ているにも関わらず、あまりなす術がなくて変に予定調和を迎えるのもどうよ。

リチャード・ケリーの映画って観てるときよりもむしろ観たあとの謎解きが楽しいわけで、あの大傑作デビュー作「ドニー・ダーコ」はホームページなどに散りばめられた情報を集めてストーリーを解読していくのが面白かったし、前作「サウスランド・テイルズ」もプロット自体は破綻していたもののあの世界観や結末に関する論議を掲示板とかで読んだりしたんだが、どうもこの作品はあまりそういう気にならないんだよな。微妙に謎解きが劇中で完結されてしまってるせいなのか、あるいは単に興味を惹く謎が無いからなのか。

あと音楽はアーケイド・ファイアの人たちが担当したらしいが、いろんなところで音楽が鳴りっぱなしで俺にはずいぶん耳障りに聞こえた。大げさな曲調も70年代のパスティーシュかも知れないけど、もっと抑え気味でも良かったんじゃないの。音楽が話の邪魔したらダメでしょ。

サスペンスに満ちた描写とかは十分にあるし、決して悪い作品だとは言わないが、リチャード・ケリーの作品のなかでは一番の不発かな。あの人もっと実験的なことをやるべきだと思うんだけど。シリアスでハードなジャンル映画をお求めの型には、これよりも「月に囚われた男」のほうをお薦めします。
