コメディ・セントラルの看板番組「THE DAILY SHOW WITH JON STEWART」（日本じゃCNNでやってんだって？？）のスピンオフ番組「THE COLBERT REPORT」がこないだ始まった。番組のホストは「デイリーショー」の人気特派員の一人だったスティーブン・コルベアー。「COLBERT」を「コルベアー」と発音するのにひっかけて、番組名も「コルベアー・レポー」と発音するのが正しいんだとか。 基本的な内容は「デイリーショー」と同じで、政治風刺が主体の構成なんだけど、「デイリーショー」ではジョン・スチュワートが地のままでリベラル寄りのホストをしているのに対し、「レポー」ではコルベアーが「横柄で自己中心的な右寄りのホスト」というキャラクターを演じている点が大きく違う。どうもフォックス・ニュースの保守コメンタリー番組「オライリー・ファクター」なんかのパロディになっているらしいんだけど、幸か不幸かフォックス・ニュースはまともに観たことがないので分かりません。

番組の大まかな構成は、まず前半に「THE WORD」という、その日のキーワードを取り上げて論じるというセグメントがあって、後半は「デイリーショー」同様にいろんな分野からのゲストが登場してコルベアーと語る、というもの。「ゲストを常に論破する」というのがコルベアーの趣旨になっているため、度肝を抜くような質問を相手に投げかけてるのが面白い。普通なら怒りそうな質問を、ほとんどのゲストがうまく受け止めてるのを見ると、事前に何かしら打ち合わせをしてるのかな。

役になりきったコルベアーが右寄りのトンチンカンなコメントを発し続ける、というのが番組の基本的なスタイルであるため、その過激な発言に観客がちょっと驚いて、そのあとジョークだと理解して笑うことが多く、「デイリーショー」に比べると観客のレスポンスがいまいち悪い感じがする。あと特派員のレポートなどが多い「デイリーショー」に比べて「レポー」ではコルベアーが最初から最後まで喋りっぱなしなんだけど、ベテランのコメディアンにしては台詞の言い間違いが結構多いのが気になるかと。まあ始まったばかりの番組なので、徐々にこなれていくでしょう。
