放送前のBBCドラマがネットに流出して注目度アップ
前にも書いた新「ドクター・フー」の第１エピソードがネット上に流出した件だが、これはむしろBBCが宣伝のために意図的に流したのではないか、という噂がずいぶん出ているようだ。海賊版にしてはあまりにも映像や音声のクオリティが良すぎる、というのが主な根拠らしい。もちろんBBCはこの噂を否定しているけど、「ドクター・フー」のようなギーク連中にカルト人気を誇るシリーズならこのような宣伝方法は非常に効果があるのではないか。実際に相当な関心を呼んだようだし。
ということで早速ファイルを入手して鑑賞してみた（良い子は真似しないように）。噂どおりデータのクオリティは非常にいい。明らかに完成版、もしくは準完成版のマスターテープから関係者が流出させたものだろう。本当に宣伝のために流されたのかどうかは不明だが、それなりの手間をかけてエンコードしているのは間違いない。
ここで「ドクター・フー」を知らない人（不届き者め！）のために簡単な説明をしておくと、これはイギリスで1963年に始まった人気SFシリーズで、主人公の「ドクター」が時間と空間を自在に移動できる装置「ターディス」（外見は警察専用の電話ボックス、というのがミソ）に乗り込み、助手たちとともに悪い異星人などを撃退していく、といった内容のもの。日本の「ウルトラマン」やアメリカの「スター・トレック」に匹敵するような国民的SF番組だが、オヤジが主人公なので必ずしもアクションが売りではなく、むしろエキセントリックなドクターのとぼけた行動が番組の大きな魅力になっている。
ドクターは13の命を持つ異星人という設定なので、ドクターの役者が変わっても「彼は体を再生した」ということでシリーズが続けられてきたが、残念ながら1989年に7代目ドクターの段階で放送が終了してしまった。その後もアメリカの市場を狙ったパイロット版が1996年に製作されているが、不発に終わっている（俺は好きだが）。そして今回は名優クリストファー・エクレストンが９代目ドクターとなり、実に16年ぶりに新シリーズの放送が決まった次第である。
そして第１エピソードの肝心の内容は…。ウォーレン・エリスがレビューで「アメリカのSci-Fiチャンネルが放送を渋ったのもよく分かる。ストーリーがあまりにもイギリス的だからだ」と言ってたが、本当にその通りだった。舞台はロンドンだし、登場人物の台詞はみんなイギリス訛りで、特に主人公であるクリストファー・エクレストンはランカシャー訛りが炸裂しまくってる。「あなたが異星人なら、何で北部訛りがあるのよ」と劇中で言われて、「どの惑星にも北はあるだろ」と応えてたのには笑ったが。まあ「ドクター・フー」はロンドン塔や悪天候と同じくらいのイギリス名物なので個人的には全然構わないけど、アメリカの市場に食い込むにはキツいかな。
あとセットに金をかけてるわりには、特撮や役者の演技がショボいかと。まあここらへんは編集に手間をかければどうにかなりそうなので、もし今回流出した映像が完成版でないとすれば、より凝ったものを期待したいものだ。
そして脚本もかなりマズい。今回ドクターが対決するのはプラスチックを自在に操ることのできる異星からの存在で、彼はロンドン中のプラスチックを操って地球征服を狙うのだが…。もちょっとマシな敵は考えつかなかったのか？マネキンが動き出して人を襲ったり、ゴミバケツが人を喰うシーンは見ててかなり力が抜ける。まるでコメディの「レッド・ドワーフ」のようだ。まあ昔から子供向けのシリーズであったので、あまり高尚なストーリーを期待してはいけないんだろうけど、ダレークやサイバーメンといったかつての宿敵たちの復活が望まれる。
そして最大の問題は、ドクターの新しい助手となるローズがブスだということに尽きる。歴代のドクターには数多くの助手がついてきたが、今回のローズはかなり個人的には受け付けないです。ローズ役のビリー・パイパーはイギリスで有名なポップ歌手だということだが、ちょっと人選ミスでしょう。演技もヘタだし。
その代わりと言ってはなんだが、主人公のエクレストンはドクターのエキセントリックな雰囲気をうまく出していて楽しい。ドクターにしてはたまに弱気な表情を見せるところが気になるが、それはこれからの脚本次第ということで。ぜひ人気の復活してほしいシリーズである。
