監督ミシェル・ゴンドリー＆脚本チャーリー・カウフマンという、「ヒューマン・ネイチュア」のコンビによる第２弾。何を書いてもネタバレになってしまうような物語構成なので内容についてはあまり詳しく書かないけれども、別れた恋人の記憶を消すために科学療法を受けることに同意した主人公が、消え行く記憶のなかで恋人がいかに大切な存在であったかに気づく、という意外なほどストレートなラブ・ストーリーになっている。
ただ厄介なのは物語の大半が主人公の頭の中で起きていることと、話の進行が時間通りになっていないため、一度観ただけでは話の全容がかなり分かりにくいようになっていることで、もちろんこれがこの作品の特徴なのだけれども、２人の「最初の出会い」が２度起きたりするので、ずいぶん頭がこんがらがってくると思う。
主人公を演じるジム・キャリーは今までのイメージと違う、やつれた雰囲気が出ていてなかなかの好演。でも恋人役のケイト・ウインスレットが個人的にはどうもダメなんだよなあ。演技は上手だと思うけど、恋する女性というよりもえらくタフな女性に見えてしまうのは俺だけだろうか。バカそうで実は…のキルステン・ダンストの役回りが良かった。
カウフマンはその昔、フィリップ・K・ディックの小説「暗闇のスキャナー」の脚本を書いた経験があるそうだけど（現在リチャード・リンクレイターが撮影中なのは別の脚本）、消え行く記憶のなかで自分のアイデンティティを求める主人公の遍歴はディックっぽいと思えなくもない。玄人筋の受けはかなり良い作品（imdbでは歴代33位にランクされてる）だけど、やはり話が難解なので日本でのウケはどのくらいのものか。
