HBOの新作シリーズ。
あまり日本では知られてないがイギリスのTV業界にはアーマンド・イアヌーチ（ヤヌーチ？）という人がいまして、クリス・モリスと組んだりスティーブ・クーガンと一緒に「アラン・パートリッジ」を作ったりと、90年代からずっとトンガったコメディ番組を作ってる非常に腕利きの監督・脚本家・プロデューサーなのですよ。その彼の代表作に、英国首相の口の悪い補佐官の奮闘を描いた「THE THICK OF IT」（およびその映画版「IN THE LOOP」）という作品があるんだが、この「VEEP」はそのアメリカ版というべき内容になっている。
題名通り話の主人公はアメリカの副大統領（Vice PresidentだからVeepね）のセリーナ・メイヤーで、彼女は気さくな性格を持っている一方でどこか抜けたところがあり、スピーチなどで失言をしてドジを踏むようなタイプ。そんな彼女を支えるはずのスタッフも間抜けか野心家ばかりで、まっとうに仕事ができない有様。こうしてセリーナの周りではトラブルが次々と発生し…というようなプロットになっている。
主人公のセリーナを演じるのは「サインフェルド」のジュリア・ルイス・ドレイファスで、50歳超えてるというのにコケティッシュな演技が似合うなあ。あとは彼女の補佐官を「アレステッド・ディベロップメント」のトニー・ヘイルが演じていた。ちなみに大統領は画面上に登場しない設定になっているらしい。
ラフ・トラックなどは無くて、「THE OFFICE」などのように気まずい展開を笑うタイプのコメディだが、セリフの量がやたら多くてストーリーがテンポ良く進むような感じ。また「THE THICK OF IT」同様にありとあらゆる罵詈雑言が繰り出されるぞ。実際のホワイトハウスもこんなに無能な人たちが揃ってるだろうかと想像すると怖いものがあるし、野心家のスタッフの態度にはかなりムカついたりもしたんだが、コメディとしては何度も大笑いできるところがあった番組かと。
なんか「THE THICK OF IT」はこんどWOWOWでやるそうですが、これもいずれ日本で観られたりするんですかね？
