家の近くにある映画館へ、ジョン・セイルズの「SILVER CITY」を観に行く。いわゆる２番館なのだけど、1930年代に建てられたというその建物は外見も内装も当時の雰囲気がそのまま残っていて、中には古めかしい映写機が飾られていたりもする、とてもアットホームな映画館だった。座席数も比較的多く、東銀座の東劇になんとなく似ている気がする。ただ数年前にDTSサウンドシステムを入れたらしいが、あまり音響は良くなかった。
映画自体はクリス・クーパー演じるコロラドの悪徳議員（明らかにブッシュがモデル）を中心とした風刺映画…かと思っていたら、ダニー・ヒューストン演じる調査員が主人公の、「チャイナタウン」のようなミステリー色の強い作品だった。ティム・ロスにリチャード・ドレイファス、ソーラ・バーチなどキャストが豪華なのはいいけど、男性陣がみんなくぐもった声でベラベラ喋るような連中ばかりなので何を言ってるのか聞きづらく、ただでさえ複雑なプロットがさらに分からなくなっていたのは残念。エンディングはなかなか皮肉が痛烈で面白かったけど。
ちなみによく考えてみたら、ジョン・セイルズの映画って「フィオナの海」しか観たことがなかったんだよな。
