１２月１日にやっとiTunes Music Storeがカナダでも使えるようになった。１年以上前にアメリカでスタートして以来、カナダ版の開設が長らく期待されていたわけだが、アップルが当初発表していた11月の開設が間に合わなかったことを考えると、権利の交渉などがかなり長引いたのだろう。曲揃え自体はアメリカ版にやや劣るような気がするが、これからの発展が期待される。個人的にはカナダの銀行口座を開いていないので使用できないけど、このために開いてもいいな。
iTMSがスタートした当初はオンラインの音楽ストアの成功を疑問視する意見が多かったけど、その爆発的な売れ行きによって、現在はもう「成功するか」ではなく「成功をどう維持できるか」に焦点が移ってきているような気がする。こうした成功はスティーブ・ジョブスなどが提唱した「合法的なダウンロードの場を与えなければ、違法なダウンロードは減らない」という考えを証明するものだろうけど、それに比べると日本のレコード会社は相変わらずセコい。iTMSのDRMはユルいなんてことを言って日本での開設を渋っているけど、アメリカでもイギリスでも同じDRMで成功してるんだよ？今年のイギリスでのレコードの売り上げは過去最高だったんだよ？単に曲の値段を下げられるのが怖いから市場の開放に反対してるだけだろうけど、洋楽だけでいいから早く日本でもiTMSが開いてほしいものだ。
