「THE OFFICE」以来、リッキー・ジャヴェイスと組んでいろいろコメディ番組を世に出してきたスティーブン・マーチャントが、ジャヴェイス抜きで主演・脚本・監督を担当したHBOの新シリーズ。第１話がyoutubeにアップされていた。
主人公のスティーブンはロマンスを求めてイギリスからロサンゼルスにやって来たウェブデザイナー。女の子をゲットするために律儀にクラブに行って「やあ彼女たち！」と声をかけたり、知り合った女性を食事に誘ったりするもののすべて失敗続き。その一方で彼の友人たちはうまく女性たちをものにしていて…というようなプロット。
少なくとも第１話はあまり話らしきものがなくて、スティーブンの奮闘ぶりがひたすら描かれる内容になっている。コメディ番組とはいえゲラゲラ笑えるようなものではなくて、同じくイギリス人が絡んだHBOの「エキストラ」とか「FAMILY TREE」みたいな、ペーソスが入り混じったコメディドラマになっているかな。クラブでカッコつけるんだけど相手にされず、酒だけ奢らさせられる主人公の姿は他人事とは思えないですね。
ただやはり立派な家を女友達とシェアしていて、一緒にクラブ行くような男友達がいて、ウェブデザインで生活していて、身長２メートルある主人公が非モテというのはなんか無理があるんじゃないだろうか。本当にモテないというのはなあ、といろいろ書き連ねたいのだがそれはまた別の機会にする。１人でさびしく夕食を電子レンジで温めてる姿なんかは似合ってるんだけどね。
第１話のパターンがこのまま続くようだとキツいだろうが、今後の展開はどうなっていくのかな。こないだの「FAMILY TREE」なんかは話が進むにつれてどんどん面白くなっていったので、そういうことになるのを期待。
