「シュガーマン 奇跡に愛された男」や「アンヴィル！」みたいな、忘れ去られたバンドを追いかけたドキュメンタリー。

1970年代初頭のデトロイト。黒人であるデビッドとボビーとダニスのハックニー３兄弟はザ・フーやアリス・クーパーに触発され、ロックバンドを組むことを決意する。モータウン全盛期のデトロイトにおいて彼らのような黒人がロックミュージックを演奏することは異色なことであり、近所の人たちからも「白人の音楽じゃないの！」と色目で見られた彼らだが、構わずに練習を続けて腕を上達させていく。当初はバンド名をロック・ファイヤー・ファンク・エキスプレスと名乗っていたものの、すぐにリーダーのデビッドの発案により名前を「デス」へと変更する（彼らは敬虔なクリスチャンであり、それなりにスピリチュアルな意向があったらしい）。

そして適当に選んだスタジオに入ってアルバムの収録を始めた彼らはプロデューサーに曲の良さを認められ、レコード会社の幹部にも紹介してもらう。しかしそのまんま「死」というバンド名が敬遠され、そのレコード会社はおろか世界中のレコード会社から拒絶をくらってしまうが、デビッドはバンド名の変更を頑として拒んでいた。仕方なしにアルバムの完成は諦め、７インチシングルを500枚ほどプレスした彼らは気晴らしも兼ねてニューイングランドに移るが、そこでもバンド名が災いしてライブの宣伝さえも認めてもらえなかった。そして結局のところ別のバンド名でゴスペル・ロックのアルバムを制作するもののヒットせず、失意のもとにデビッドはデトロイトに戻り、ボビーとダニスは残ってレゲエバンドを結成するものの、デビッドは80年代に肺がんで亡くなってしまう。

そして時は流れて2000年代。デスのレコードはいつの間にか「デトロイトのバンドの激レアな傑作」としてレコードコレクターのあいだで噂されるようになり、実際にレコードを入手した者がMP3にしてネットで公開したことでさらにデスのカルト的な人気が高まっていく。さらにボビーの息子が友人に勧められて曲を聞いたところ、「これ親父の声じゃね？」と気づいたことで、もはや忘れ去られていたデスの歴史が再び明らかになっていく（ボビーはデスのことを息子に話していなかったらしい）。こうしてまたデスはレコード会社に注目され、今回はバンド名も問題にならないまま、録音してから30数年ぶりにアルバム「…For The Whole World To See」が発売されることとなった。ボビーの３人の息子たちはアルバムの宣伝も兼ねてトリビュート・バンドのラフ・フランシスを結成し（普通にプロ並みの演奏をこなしてしまっているのが凄い）、そしてついにボビーとダニスもデビッドの代役のギタリストを立ててデスを再結成することを決意する…というストーリー。

「パンクよりも前に、デスというパンクバンドがあった！」というのがこの映画のキャッチコピーで、これを観るにあたって「..For The Whole World To See」を聴いてみたのだけど、パンクというよりもガレージ・ロックやザ・フーに近い感じじゃないかな？でも演奏力の抜群な高さとタイトなプロダクション（もっと自家録りみたいな音かと思っていた）のおかげで、確かにすごく良いアルバムであった。

映画はおおまかに２部構成になっていて、バンドの生い立ちからデビッドの死までが語られる前半と、バンドの再評価から再結成までが語られる後半からなっている。特に後半ではヘンリー・ロリンズやジェロ・ビアフラ、ヴァーノン・リードといったミュージシャンのコメントも出てくるのだけど、全編を通じて語られるのは、兄弟３人の結束から始まり、彼らの音楽が息子たちに引き継がれるという家族の絆の物語である。兄弟たちの母親の葬式で話が終わるところもそれを象徴している。

あとはレコードコレクターが見つけたレコードをウェブにアップすることで、その曲がすぐに世界中で聴けるようになるという描写が、音楽の共有のスタイルの変化を象徴してるかな。ちょっと前まではレアなレコードの共有なんて（ローバート・クラムのマンガにもあるが）数人が集まって一緒に聴くという手段くらいしかなかったもので。またラフ・フランシスや再結成したデスの観客の大半が白人だというのも印象的であった。

70年代に活躍していたときの映像が殆ど無いことや、バンドの中心人物であったデビッドがいないことで弱冠内容が薄いような気もするが、こういう音楽ドキュメンタリーが好きな人は十分楽しめるであろう良作。
