ジョン・フォード＆ジョン・ウェインのコンビによる「捜索者」を鑑賞。ジョン・ウェインってあんまり好きじゃないんだけど、この映画についてははいい評判をよく目にしていたので。

最初は頼れるタフガイだったウェインが、コマンチェ族への憎悪のあまり、彼らに「汚された」自分の姪を殺そうとするあたりから、観る人に「もしかしていちばんヤバいのはインディアンでなくウェインじゃないか？」と考えさせる展開は見事。ただし重厚なテーマが根底にあるだけに、ところどころに出てくるコメディ・タッチの描写がえらく気になってしまうんだよな。インディアンのカミさんとか、結婚式での殴り合いとかを省いていればもっと傑作になったと思うんだが、どうよ？やはり50年代の活劇大作ってこういう娯楽的要素を含まないといけなかったのかしらん。フォード作品の最高傑作の１つとして語られる映画だけど、俺は「駅馬車」とか「怒りの葡萄」のほうがずっと好きだな。

それにしてもこの作品のヴェラ・マイルズといい、「静かなる男」のモーリーン・オハラといい、フォード映画に出てくる気の強い女性たちは本当に魅力的ですね。芯は強いんだけどアバズレじゃなくて、ワガママそうで実際は淑女といった感じで非常に美しい。時代の流れのなかで、ああいった女性たちは姿を消していってしまいましたね。あとタイプとしては正反対のヴァンプ的女優だけど、マレーネ・ディートリッヒがジョン・ウェインの腕にもたれてタバコに火をつけてる写真をベルリンの映画博物館で見たことがあって、その美しさとウェインのダンディさにえらく衝撃を受けたことがあったっけ。
