第二次大戦中は日系人の強制収容所で育ち、60年代に「スター・トレック」のスールー役として世界の人気者になり、そして2000年代になってからカミングアウトしてゲイのアイコンとなり、77歳にしてSNSで膨大なフォロワーを誇るという実は唯一無二の人生を送ってきたジョージ・タケイについてのドキュメンタリー。

旦那であるブラッド・アルトマンとの睦まじい夫婦（夫夫？）仲を紹介しながら、彼の生い立ちが語られていくもので、東京生まれでアメリカにやってきた父と、アメリカ生まれだが人種で隔離された学校を避けて日本で教育を受けた母とのあいだに生まれたジョージは、第二次大戦の勃発により一家の家財がアメリカ政府に没収され、カリフォルニアからアーカンソーの強制収容所に運びこまれ、終戦までそこで暮らすこととなる。ここらへんは日本人にとっても興味深い証言じゃないかな。

そして終戦後に解放された一家はカリフォルニアに戻り、父は中華料理屋の皿洗いから始めて再び家庭を支えることになる。青年になったジョージは当時から男性に興味があったわけだが、ここらへんのセクシャリティの目覚めについては結構フランクに語ってるのね。さらに彼は演技にも興味を持って役者を目指すのだが、最初にやった仕事は「空の大怪獣ラドン」のアメリカ版吹替の声優だったのか！それからテレビ番組の脇役としてあちこちに出演するようになり、やがて「スター・トレック」のスールー役を演じて世界的に名が知られるようになる。ジョン・チョウやBD・ウォンといったアジア系の役者が彼の影響についてコメントしてるけど、確かにアジア人の役者って当時少なかったからね。おれが初めて「スター・トレック」を観た80年代半ば当時でも、そんなにいなかったんじゃないのか。

役者の仕事のほかにも、博愛主義者だった父親の影響を受けて政治活動に関わるようになり、強制収容された日系人たちへの補償を求める運動も積極的に行なうようになる。そしてクリントン大統領に任命されて日米友好基金の理事をつとめ、日本政府からは旭日小綬章を授与されるのだが、式典に出るために東京へ行ったら、ブラッドが男性であるために式典への同席を拒否されたという話が明かされる。意外なところで日本の差別意識が指摘されたというか。

役者としての活動に影響が出ることを恐れ、長い間カミングアウトすることを控えていたものの（でも「トレック」のキャストにはバレてたし、当時からハリウッドにもハッテン場があったらしい）、シュワルツネッガーが知事として同性婚を認める法案を拒否したことに憤激してカミングアウトを決意し、それ以降はゲイの人権擁護のためにも積極的に活動。またハワード・スターンのラジオ番組の準レギュラーに起用されたことでさらなるファンを獲得し、Facebookを通じて数多くの人々と交流するさまが紹介されていく。

自由奔放なジョージと、良い人なんだけど心配性でカメラを常に気にしているブラッドのかけあいが漫才コンビのようで微笑ましい。その人柄から本当に多くの人たちに愛されているのが明らかで、コミコンとかに出ても大勢のオタクどもにあちこちで歓迎されているのがよく分かる。なおコミコンでウィル・ウィートンと再会したときに「太ったね」と言ったらウィートンが露骨に落ち込むシーンが出てくるのだが、どう見てもあいつ太ったからなあ…。

まあ自分の生い立ちや活動については以前からインタビューなどで積極的に語っていたし、ファンにとっては目新しい内容ではないものの、彼の経歴を紹介する意味では格好のドキュメンタリーではないでしょうか。いま日本のテレビでは「海外で活躍する日本人」をとりあげるのが流行ってるみたいだけど、彼も取り上げればいいのに。ジョージ・タケイほど世界で愛されてる日系人はそういないよ！
