目玉のマスクやその他たくさんの仮面を被り、正体を隠して40年以上コツコツと奇妙な音楽とパフォーマンスを披露し続けているサンフランシスコ出身のバンド、ザ・レジデンツのドキュメンタリー。彼らの詳しい経歴についてはウィキペディアの記事（おれが訳しました）を参照してください。

ヒッピー文化真っ盛りのサンフランシスコに前衛音楽をやりたい若者たちが集まったところからザ・レジデンツの経歴が語られるわけだが、当然のごとくこのドキュメンタリーには本人たちがいっさい登場しないので、当時の彼らを知る人々や元スタッフ、彼らのファンたちによってレジデンツの功績が語られていく。

インタビューを受けてるのはレス・クレイプールやマット・グレーニング、ペン・ジレットなどといったレジデンツ好きで知られる人々のほか、ディーヴォのメンバーやトーキング・ヘッズのジェリー・ハリソンなども登場していたし、レジデンツをサポートする団体であったクリプティック・コーポレーションのホーマー・フリンも多くを語っていた。なおホーマー・フリンこそがレジデンツの中の人ではないかという噂はファンのあいだで長らく語られてきたのだが、それの手がかりとなるような話は何も出てこなかった。

扱っている題材に比べるとドキュメンタリーの作りはいささか凡庸だが、レジデンツとして活動する前にサンフランシスコで演奏していた映像とか（画質が悪くて顔は見えず）、未完に終わった白黒映画「ヴァイルネス・ファッツ」のセットのカラー写真とか、目玉マスクの仕組みの説明（瞳の部分から外を見ることができ、ベルトで頭に固定するらしい）などといった映像は貴重かも。

なお題名の「Theory of Obscurity」というのは彼らと初期に共演していたサックス奏者のミステリアス・Nセナダが提唱したという「アーティストは正体が分からないときこそ、その真価を発揮できる」というセオリーであり、これに基づいてレジデンツは顔を隠し、性別を隠し、正体を隠しているのである。ここらへんはバンクシーなんかと通じるものがあるのかな。しかしNセナダがそもそも実在の人物ではないという説もあるようで、実に謎である…。

レジデンツの入門書みたいなドキュメンタリーだが、これを観て興味を持った人は彼らのPV集である「イッキー・フリックス」なんかを観てみると彼らの斬新さが分かるのではないでしょうか。姿を隠したままこれからもザ・レジデンツは活動を行い、俺やあなたたちが亡くなったあともレジデンツは生き続けるのである。
