ITVの新シリーズ。ミニシリーズ扱いになるのかな？

舞台は1901年のロンドン。シャーロック・ホームズを「最後の事件」で葬って、ボーア戦争に関する執筆を行っていたアーサー・コナン・ドイルは、修道院で幽霊による殺人が行われたとの新聞記事を目にし、これこそ心霊が存在する証しだとして警察署にやってくる。しかし一方ではロンドンで公演中のハリー・フーディーニも事件のことを知り、幽霊はトリックだということを示すために警察に来ていた。警察に迷惑がられた彼らはお目付け役として女性刑事のストラッットン刑事をあてがわれ、お互いが正しいことを証明するために事件の調査を始めるのだが…というあらすじ。

コナン・ドイルということで「SHERLOCK」みたいなブロマンスのミステリーものを期待する人もいるかもしれないが、ここのドイルは心霊現象に傾倒しているという設定なので（本格的にハマったのは第一次大戦後だったと思うが）、物的証拠をもって生身の犯人を突き止めるのではなく、何でも心霊のせいにしてしまう人物という設定になっている。しかし当然ながら「殺人は幽霊のせいでした！」というオチにするわけにもいかないので、結局は自分のミスを認めるという損な役回りになっているかな。

対するフーディーニは実際にインチキ霊媒師のデバンカーでもあったから心霊現象にはすべて懐疑的で、あくまでも合理的に事件を捜査していくのに加え、錠前を開けたりするのも朝飯前、というカッコいい役になっている。ほかに実在の人物としてはチャーチルやイェーツなどもチョイ役で出てきてたが、今後はエジソンやブラム・ストーカーなんかも登場するとか。

フーディーニを演じるのが「HOUSE」のマイケル・ウェストンで、ドイル役が「EPISODES」のスティーブン・マンガン。「EPISODES」ってまだアメリカで撮影が終わってないんじゃなかったっけ？あとはあまり有名な役者は出てないみたい。

さすがにドイルが毎回ミスをしているようでは示しがつかないから、あとのエピソードではもっと心霊的な要素が増えてくるのかな？心霊現象にハマったあとのコナン・ドイルって例の妖精写真などであまり評判が良くない印象があるけど、個人的には唯物論者の科学者であるチャレンジャー教授がラストで霊魂の存在を認めることになる「霧の国」とか結構好きなので、うまーくスーパーナチュラルな要素を絡めてほしいところです。
