53歳。アメコミの巨匠がまた一人、しかも急にまだ若くして帰らぬ人となってしまった。
彼のブログが奥さんによって更新され、ガンの治療中であるという事実が公表されたのが一昨日くらいのこと。「aggressive cancer」という表現に不安を感じたものの、カナダ人なのでまっとうな治療を受けられるのではないか、それまで彼の本を買って何かしらの援助ができるかな、と思っていたら、昨日になって他界したとの報が入ってきてしまった。残念。
俺が彼の作品に触れたのは2004年くらいのこと。その前にもしかしたらアニメ版「バットマン」で彼の仕事を目にしていたかもしれない。当時は「DC: The New Frontier」がミニ・シリーズとして出版されていて、良い評判は聞いていたもののアブストラクトな表紙のせいか手にとって読んだりはしなかったのですね、しかしその後ニューヨークでペーパーバック版をふと立ち読みしたところ、その簡潔で力強い線、アメリカの公民権運動の時代を背景にゴールデン・エイジとシルバー・エイジのヒーローたちが共闘していくそのストーリーに大ショックを受けまして、やたらと重いアブソルート・エディションを帰国後に速攻で買いましたよ。トロントで彼に会う機会があったものの、講演時間を知らずに逃してしまったのが悔やまれる。
彼が描く女性の画も俺の好みだった。
またそのスタイルから、どうしても明朗なスーパーヒーローもののイメージが強いが、「The New Frontier」ではきちんと人種差別などの問題も描いていたし、ドナルド・ウェストレイク（リチャード・スターク）の小説「悪党パーカー」シリーズのファンとして晩年のウェストレイクとコミック化について共同作業を行い、今まで小説以外では「パーカー」を名乗ることが認められなかった主人公の名前を、原作者のお墨付きでパーカーとすることができたのもクックの功績である（ジェイソン・ステイサムの映画「パーカー」が出たのはウェストレイクの死後）。タフで感情を見せない主人公パーカーのハードボイルドな雰囲気を、限られた色調で彼は見事に描き出していた。
最近ではヴァーティゴの「The Twilight Children」のアートも担当していたし、ハンナ・バーベラもののアートを描いていたので、これからも精力的に活動を続けていくんだろうなと思っていた矢先での死去は大変悔やまれる。合掌。
