アカデミー４部門にノミネートされてる作品。

故オーガスト・ウィルソンの戯曲を映画化したもので、主演のデンゼル・ワシントンとヴィオラ・デイヴィスはブロードウェイで既に同じ役をやってるんですね。だからあんな長ったらしいセリフをスラスラ話していたのか。デンゼルは監督もやっていて、以前の監督作「アントワン・フィッシャー」はそんなに高い評価を得なかった覚えがあるが、この映画に前後して監督した「グレイズ・アナトミー」の１エピソードは絶賛されてたので、監督しての腕前も上がってるんでしょう。

話の50年代のピッツバーグ。ゴミの収集をして働くトロイは、かつてニグロリーグでの優秀な野球選手だったが、メジャーリーグが黒人を受け入れるようになった時には年をとりすぎており、プロで活躍できなかったことを悔やんでいる人物。彼の妻のローズは献身的な妻であり、一人息子のコーリーだけでなく、戦争で脳に障害を負ったトロイの弟や、トロイが結婚前につくった息子にも優しく接していた。そしてコーリーはフットボールの選手として成功をつかむ機会を手に入れるが、トロイはそのことを快く思わず…というようなあらすじ。

元が舞台劇のためか話の大半はトロイの家の裏の庭で進行して、そこで登場人物たちがいろいろ語り合う内容。たくさんたくさん語ってます。トロイは真面目に働いている一方で物分かりの悪い頑固親父であり、自分が野球で大成できなかったことを未だに根に持つために、人生を野球で語ろうとしてローズに呆れられるような人物。彼は自分が手にできなかった成功を息子たちが手にすることが気に入らず、露骨ではないものの彼らの進展を阻害するような、まあクズ親父ですね。彼は自分が黒人として初めて、ゴミの収集係でなく収集車の運転手になれたことを誇りに思っていたりするわけだが、おそらく時代的に黒人にもっと職業の選択が与えられた頃の話であって、そこらへんのジェネレーションギャップを表現した話になっているんだろう。

ただクズ親父を演じるにあたって、デンゼンル・ワシントンってやはりカッコよすぎるわけで、息子を威圧するような男性を演じても、観る人は彼に同調してしまうんじゃないだろうか。話の後半になってさらにクズっぷりを発揮するものの、それでも嫌いになれないというか。そんな彼に耐え続けるローズを演じるヴィオラ・デイヴィスは大変素晴らしくて、アカデミー助演女優賞は手堅いんじゃないかな？

なお題名の「Fences」というのはトロイが裏庭に建てたがっているフェンスのことを指しており、彼と周囲の人々の心の壁、および彼が死神を防ぐための柵、などであることが示唆されてます。あくまでも未完成であることがポイントな。

日本では残念ながら劇場公開されず、「フェンス」の邦題でDVDスルーされるそうな。決して派手な内容の作品ではないけど、親と子の断絶というのは日本人にも理解しやすいテーマだと思うので、アカデミー候補ということで興味を持った人は観てみて損はしないと思う。
