こないだレジデンツに行ったばかりですが、マッドネス来日と聞けば行かずにはおるまいと思って。80年代初頭にイギリスに住んでたときからのファンなのです。当時はPVの面白いコミックバンド的な存在だったけど、演奏は手堅いし歌詞も意外と真面目なバンドなのですよ。

場所は六本木のEXシアター。開演前のドリンク待ちの行列がやたら長いことと、ハイハットなどの高音が割れてるような印象を受けたかな。メンバーはいわゆる黄金期メンバー(チャズ・スマッシュだけ不在）とパーカッションにホーン３人。ドラマーがやけに若いように見えたけどオリジナルメンバーだったんですね。ボーカルのサッグスとサックスのリー・トンプソンにスポットライトが当たってる感じで、リーダー（？）のマイク・バーソンは後ろで黙々とキーボードを弾いていた。ベースのマーク・ベッドフォードも童顔だったけどさすがに老けたのう。

初っ端から新アルバムの曲をやったけど、大体3分の2くらいは再結成前の曲だったかな？「House of Fun」「It Must Be Love」「Embarrassment」などなど、ヒット曲のオンパレード。久しぶりに演奏したという「Cardiac Arrest」もあったし、「Wings of a Dove」も女性コーラス抜きだけど結構良かった。やはり客が盛り上がるのは「Our House」あたりで、途中の「あ〜あ〜あ〜あ〜」というコーラスも大合唱。マッドネスと聞けば日本人の多くが連想するであろう「In The City」（CMソングだったのよ）は意外にも演奏せず。おれは「Bed and Breakfast Man」が好きなんだけどあれも演奏なかったな。

最後は「Madness」と「Night Boat To Cairo」で締め。若い頃は懐メロだらけのライブってなんか軽蔑してたけど、年とってくるとそうも言ってらんないすね。30年以上ファンのバンドのライブが拝めて満足でございました。
