タイトルだけ見ると「またゾンビものかい！」と勘違いしそうだが、そんなんでは全くなくて真面目な伝記映画。
アマゾンの秘境の探索に心血を注いだ冒険家パーシー・フォーセットの半生を描いたもので、話は20世紀初頭から始まる。イギリス陸軍に所属していたフォーセットは技量を見込まれ、南米のボリビアとブラジルの紛争調停のために両国の国境線の測量を依頼される。親が没落させた家系の出身であるフォーセットは、家の名誉の挽回を狙って依頼を受託し、うだるような暑さのジャングルの奥地へと向かう。そこでは原住民に襲われたりと苦難に見舞われながらも川をさかのぼり任務を達成した彼だったが、そこで陶器の破片や彫像を発見し、かつてアマゾンの奥地には高度に発達した文明が存在したという確信を抱くようになる。フォーセットはその文明の都市を「Z（ゼッド）」と名付け、帰国したのちに学会で発表するものの、他の学者たちには信用されずに嘲笑されてしまう。しかし彼の信念は揺るぎなく、ゼッドの存在を明かすために彼はふたたびアマゾンへと向かうのであった…というあらすじ。
フォーセットはインディ・ジョーンズやチャレンジャー教授のモデルにもなったという話もある冒険家だが、アマゾンでの発見や冒険よりも未知の都市を追い求めたフォーセットの人生のほうに話の重点が置かれている。ジャングルの川をさかのぼって驚異の経験をする話という点では「地獄の黙示録」、さらには「アギーレ 神の怒り」に近い内容だが、あれらの作品が西洋文化の概念がジャングルの奥地で崩壊していく話であったのに対し、こちらではむしろ野蛮なのは西洋文化（形式にこだわる学会員、仲間を裏切る冒険家、フォーセット自身も参戦した第一次世界大戦など）であり、ジャングルやそこで出会う未知の存在はフォーセットにむしろ安泰を与えてくれる存在として描かれている。
もちろんジャングルではいつも極限状態に置かれるのだけど、結構何度も無事に生還しているので、あまり緊迫感が続かないんだよな（劇中では３回の遠征が行われるが、実際は７回行われたらしい）。2時間20分の長尺だが、第一次世界大戦の描写にあんな時間を割く必要はあったのかしらん。
フォーセットの足取りを追った、「ザ・ニューヨーカー」誌の記者による同名のベストセラーをもとにした映画だが、上記の遠征回数のようにそれなりに脚色が加えられているみたい。また劇中ではアマゾンの原住民の文化に寛大な理解を示すフォーセットだが、実際は神智学の熱心な信者で、ゼッドこそは白人文明の発祥の地だと信じて探索を行っていたという話もあるようで…？
監督はジェームズ・グレイ。前作「エヴァの告白」も高い評価を得てましたが俺は未見。実際にアマゾンの過酷な環境に35ミリフィルムカメラを持ち込んで撮影した映像は美しいですよ。フォーセットを演じるのがチャーリー・ハナムで、彼の相棒の冒険家を演じるのが、最近演技がどんどん評価されているロバート・パティンソン。フォーセットの息子役にスパイダーマンことトム・ホランド。こうして書くとキャストが豪華だな。あとはフォーセットを家で待ち続ける妻役にシエナ・ミラー。なぜかフランコ・ネロもチョイ役で出てました。
興行的には失敗したものの批評家からは高い評価を得た作品だが、ジャングルとイギリスの話を交互に描いたせいか個人的にはテンポが悪いかなと感じました。ジャングルの奥地に向かうことに執念を燃やす男の映画なら、先に「アギーレ 神の怒り」を観ましょう。
