ついに始まりましたよ「The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen」の新シリーズ。「LOEG」の最終シリーズとなるばかりか、アラン・ムーアとケヴィン・オニールの作者ふたりにとっても最後のコミック作品となることが告知されている作品だが、少なくともムーア御大は過去に何度も引退をチラつかせてるので、あんまり真剣にとらえないほうがいいかも。また「Necronomicon」のときのように、税金を払う必要が出てきたらコミック書いたりするんじゃないかと…まあいいや。

全6話のシリーズで、今までの「LOEG」って第1話はプロローグ的な、比較的ストーリー展開が少ないものだったようなきがするが、今回は過去のキャラクターがいろいろ出てきて話にギアが入っておりまして、密度の高いストーリー展開が今後も期待できそうなこってす。以降はネタバレ注意。著作権の関係で名前が変わっているキャラクターは、便宜上元になったキャラクター名で記します。

・まずは昨年亡くなった、BEANO誌の「ミニー・ザ・ミンクス」や「バッシュ・ストリート・キッズ（読め！）」のクリエーターとして知られるレオ・バクセンデールに捧げる追悼コラムみたいなのが冒頭についてます。彼の功績を讃えるとともに、いかに彼が出版社によって搾取されたかを綴ってるのがムーアらしいなと。

・プロローグが３つ。一つは「2009」の終わりからそのまま続き、アフリカでアラン・クオーターメインを葬ったミナ・マーレイとオーランドー（女性形）とエマ・ピールが若返りの泉に赴き、エマが「Black Dossier」のころの年齢に若返ります。

・２つ目は白黒のSFコミック風で、火星からの勢力によって荒廃させられた2996年の地球（？）においてレジスタンスを続ける男女のスーパーヒーローがタイムマシンを奪還し、来たる大災害を警告するために女性のほうが1958年の世界にタイムスリップするというもの。これが後述のセブン・スターズに関わってくるのかな。

・最後のプロローグは全体主義が続く2009年のイギリス。エマ・ピールがミナたちと失踪したのを受けて、MI-5の新しいトップに「Black Dossier」のジェームズ・ボンドが「M」として着任します。

・一方でロンドンではミナが60年代に所属していたスーパーヒーロー・グループ「セブン・スターズ」の元メンバーであるマーズマンとサテンが、2996年の災害を防ぐために他のメンバーを探そうとします。サテンが実はプロローグに出てきた女性であり、タイムスリップにより長年災害の記憶を失っていた、ということらしい。なおセブン・スターズ時代のミナ・マーレイは透明人間のヒーローであり、誰も彼女の正体を知らない、というのがミソ。

・ミナたちを執念深く追うボンドこと「M」の物語は新聞連載の３コマ漫画形式で語られ、映画の歴代のジェームズ・ボンドが揃った「Jシリーズ（「カジノ・ロワイヤル」のウディ・アレンまでいる！」という精鋭のエージェントをひきつれ、プッシー・ガロアを尋問して得た情報によってアフリカに向かいます。そこで彼は若返りの泉を発見し、「Black Dossier」の頃の若さに戻ります。他の者が泉を使用できないように爆破したあと、ミナたちの探索を続けるのでした。

・そして追われる立場になったミナたちは、キャプテン・ネモの子孫であるジャックに助けを求めようと、原子力潜水艦スティングレイを奪い、さまざまな国をめぐって情報を得たのちにジャックの住む島へと向かいます。「イエロー・サブマリン」のペパー・ランドの廃墟なども出てくるぞ。しかし島の目前で、彼女たちは謎の巨人に捕まってしまい…。

・巻末にあるのはいつもの小説ではなく、セブン・スターズを主人公にした白黒のコミック。ヒーローたちの会合の形式をとりつつ、ミナが透明ヒーローになった由来や、謎の敵の登場、マーズマンの過去などが語られます。そしてその裏では、アメリカをベースにしたセブン・スターズに対抗するため、イギリス政府は独自のヒーローチーム「ヴィクトリー・ヴァンガード」を結成させるために暗躍していたのだった…。

とまあ、冒険活劇やらSFやらスーパーヒーローと話は盛りだくさんだし、「Vol.3」と「Black Dossier」のストーリーが集大成を迎える流れで期待は高まるばかり。「Vol.2」の火星襲撃のプロットも関係してくるのかな？「2009」では強力な助っ人を送ってきたブレイジング・ワールドのプロスペローの助けはもう期待できない、みたいな台詞も出てくるけど、シリーズの題名が「テンペスト」であることを考えると後できっと登場するのでしょう。

例によって細かいネタが散りばめられていて、元ネタが分からないものの多々あったので、そこらへんはまたジェス・ネヴィンズ氏あたりが注釈まとめてくれることに期待しましょう。第２話は9月発売だそうで、まあムーア御大のことだから刊行が遅れるんじゃないかという懸念もありますが、かなり面白いシリーズになりそうなので辛抱強く待ちましょう。
