「THEY SHALL NOT GROW OLD」鑑賞

第一次世界大戦の終結100周年を記念して作られた、ピーター・ジャクソンによるドキュメンタリー。先日イギリスで限定公開されたのだが、今週だけBBCでも配信されていた。

戦争資料館の膨大な量の映像フィルムと出征した兵士たちのインタビューを組み合わせ、戦争の始まりから終わりまでが経験者たちによって１つのナラティブとして語られる構成になっていて、特筆すべきはモノクロの映像が丹念に人工着色され、当時の雰囲気が鮮明に分かるようになっていること。後述するように音声も加えられていることから、ジャクソンはこれを純粋なドキュメンタリーとは見なしていないようだけど、兵士たちがどのような環境で戦争を過ごしたのかがよく分かる内容になっていた。

1914年にイギリスがドイツに宣戦布告したことで両国の戦争が始まるものの、イギリスの若者たちは戦争がどういうものなのかきちんと理解しないまま、同胞意識を持って（若干同調圧力もあったようだけど）次々と入隊を志願していく。みんなイギリス人のステレオタイプそのまんまに歯並びが悪い若者たちは、15歳や16歳や17歳であっても自分は18歳だとウソをつき、軍もそれを黙認して彼らを受け入れていく。

訓練では士官たちにしごかれ、支給される食事もろくなものではなかったらしいが、「特にいじめはなかった」というコメントが出てくるあたり、日本との違いを実感してしまったよ。ムカついた上官に対しては小便の入った壺をドアに仕掛けておいて、小便まみれにしてやったなんて逸話は日本でやったら死刑ものですぜ。

実際のところ兵士たちは和気あいあいとやっていて、ヒマなときはスポーツやレクリエーションに努め、給料も出たので休みの日はこぞって売春婦のところに行ったとか、機銃掃射の副産物でお湯ができたのでそれでお茶を淹れて飲んだとか、ほのぼのとしたエピソードが語られていく。まあ死なずに生き残った者たちによるプロパガンダ的な内容、ととらえることも出来るのだろうけど、多くが従軍経験を肯定的にとらえていたのが印象的であった。

とはいえそこは戦争なので、戦場に行けば兵士たちは塹壕のなかで立って寝てるし、ちょっとでも頭を出そうものなら敵の狙撃兵に狙われ、周りの泥の中には地雷などで吹き飛んだ手足が埋もれているという有様。死体の映像も当然カラーなのでショッキングなものがあった。地雷だか砲撃だかで地面が半端なく吹き飛ばされる映像もあって圧巻。マスタードガスで目をやられた兵士たちが列になって歩いている姿とかはトラウマものですよ。

塹壕のなかで風呂にも入れず膠着状態が続いていた戦況だが、やがて兵士たちは突撃を命じられて敵陣へ行進していく。味方の砲撃があまりドイツ軍に被害を与えてなくて、敵陣からは容赦なく機銃が浴びせられて兵士たちは次々と倒れていき、さらには自軍の砲撃が上空から降り注ぐなか、兵士たちは死に物狂いで戦っていく。「銃撃を受けて瀕死になっていた仲間を、介錯のために撃ち殺した」と涙ながらに話す元兵士もいる。突撃の様子は映像に記録されておらず、当時の新聞のイラストなどで再現されているが、それでも十分に緊迫感があったな。

こうした兵士たちの活躍によって敵陣は占領され、ドイツ軍の兵士たちは捕虜になるのだが、イギリス人の兵士たちは彼らの勇気を非常に称え、捕虜にしたあとは結構親密に接したりしてるのにまず驚く（ただしプロイセン兵だけは冷酷で、ドイツ兵にも嫌われてたらしい）。これも日本とは違うところだろうなあ。そうしているうちに戦争は11月11日に終戦を迎え、兵士たちは故郷へと帰っていく。帰郷先では従軍経験について理解できない親との断絶があったり、元兵士として就職難に直面したりと、それなりに辛そうな経験をしたことが示唆されるが、全体的には仲間たちと一緒に戦ったことを暖かく振り返るような内容の作品であった。

技術的には冒頭の20分くらい、兵士たちが母国で訓練を受けるあたりまでの映像は正方形のモノクロで、正直退屈ではあるのだけど、戦地に赴いてからの映像はカラライズされたフルスクリーンのものになり、人工着色とはいえやはり色がつくと戦地の環境が鮮明に伝わってくる。これ劇場公開版は3Dでも披露されたらしいが、キャタピラをギラつかせながら走る戦車の映像とかは息を飲むものがありますよ。細いところまでは再現できなかったのか兵士の顔が少しぼんやりしているところもあって、それが逆にどこか幻想的な印象を残すものになっていた。

これ映像があまりにもスムースに動くので、普通のドキュメンタリーを観ている気になってしまうが、フレームレートの異なる元の映像をすべて調整（補完）して24フレームに入れ込み、さらにカラライズしてすべての音をつけるという、かなり手の込んだ作業が4年にわたって行われたらしい。たまに兵士が「Hi Mom!」とか話すシーンがあるのだけど、そこはプロの読心術師（！）を使って何と言っているのか解析したのだとか。

この映画を作るにあたってピーター・ジャクソンは何の収益も貰わなかったらしいが、実際に戦争で戦った祖父のために映画が捧げられているのを見ると、個人的な思い入れがあってこれを作ったんだなということがよく分かる。これ機会があれば見ておくべき作品でしょう。日本でもNHKとかが買えばいいのに。
