今年のベストにちらほら挙げられている映画で、「ウィンターズ・ボーン」のデブラ・グラニックの久しぶりの監督作品。
ウィルと娘のトムの親子はオレゴンの自然公園の山奥で自給自足の生活を営み、自分たちの生活の痕跡を消すことを徹底し、人目を避けて暮らしていた。しかしトムがトレッキング中の人物に目撃されたことで、ふたりは当局に逮捕され、福祉局の保護のもとに置かれることになる。そして住居と仕事をあてがわれる親子だったが、ウィルは人と接して暮らすことを嫌い、文明にも馴染んできていたトムを連れて再び別の場所の山奥へと向かうのだったが…というあらすじ。
いまいち頼りにならない父親と、しっかり者の娘という設定は「ウィンターズ・ボーン」に通じるものがあるな。劇中では明言されていないがウィルは元兵士でPTSDに苦しんでいるようで、彼に支給されている薬物を他人に売りさばくことで多少の現金を得て、たまに町に買い出しに出てくるという内容になっている。
親子は他人との接触を避けているとはいえ、彼らが出会う人々はむしろみんな良い人たちで、福祉局は住居や仕事を紹介してくれるし、別の土地で出会う人たちも彼らの世話をしてくれるのだが、ウィルは野生動物のごとき衝動をもって山奥に消え去りたいという願望をもっているため、彼についていくべきか、それとも自分なりの道を進むべきかというトムの葛藤が主要なテーマになっている。
ウィルを演じるのがベン・フォスターで、トム役がニュージーランド出身のトーマサイン・マッケンジー。今をときめくジェニファー・ローレンスも「ウィンターズ・ボーン」でブレイクしたわけで、今回のマッケンジーも同様にこれでブレイクするんじゃないのかな。それだけ演技は繊細で良かった。
ストーリーにさほど起伏があるわけでもなく、「ウィンターズ・ボーン」に比べると面白い作品だとは思わなかったけど、美しい自然の描写をバックに、父と娘の関係が描かれるさまが印象的な作品でした。
